Our pooch is really sick
« on: January 05, 2007, 05:35:34 AM »
Our beloved dog BoBo spent the night in the vet hospital. He has a sensitive stomach, tends to get into stuff and get sick for a day or so and bounce back. Happened again after Xmas, he started to feel better, then yesterday I get a call after school from my teenager that BoBo is vomiting and has diarrhea with blood in it! Quick trip to the vet who put him right into the hospital.

He was very dehydrated but still fairly energetic, which the vet said was a good sign. Blood tests mostly OK; pancreatic a bit low, white count a bit high, but vet not worried. Xray shows no obstructions they can see. They started pepcid and I think an antibiotic. He threw up twice last afternoon/evening at the vet.

Our daughter is distraught and my husband and I are pretty upset. This is our dream dog, we've had him for a little over a year, a pound rescue and we are all in love with him.

I have to wait until 11 am to call and check up on him and I'm going nuts. At least we didn't get a call overnight saying he was getting worse; they promised to call if he was getting worse.

Awwww, I just hate hearing when a pet is sick.   :'(   :(
I hope BoBo bounces back really quick.  Please keep us updated.  Our pets are like our kids so I can sympathize with what you are going through.

Is there a chance he ate something that his tummy can't digest. I used to work with a girl who had three dogs. The one was always eating something he shouldn't. One time they did surgery and removed a whole dishtowel from him. They couldn't even figure out how he managed to get it down his throat.

It's very probable he ate something he shouldn't. He eats tissues, blankets, whatever else my daughter drops behind the sofa!  That's why the xray - to see if something was stuck inside.

Once he found a mouse (dead or almost dead) in my garden and ate it whole. Ewww!!! But that didn't disagree with him one bit.

You guys are so nice. Thank you for all the support.

He is much better. Came home yesterday afternoon around 4 pm. He has pills and special food, which he is eating happily, and he's normally a picky eater. He slept a lot yesterday afternoon and evening but seemed happy. Today he's running around playing fetch and begging for table scraps, pretty much back to his normal self.

BTW, the vet bill was "only" $571.

Glad he's better. Nothing much worse than one of our furry friends sick.  Vet care is expensive, but money well spent.

I am hoping your Bobo is doing well. I lost my sweet Minnie from cancer in Nov. I miss her dearly. She was 11.

Im glad your pup is at home recovering....
Now, its time for you to recover.. from the shock of the vet bill!
I just spent $300 dollars for ONE cat, 2 vet visits in 4 days.. and another $99 for another kitty here.. they both were pretty sick...

Amazing how fast the vet bills add right up!
What did the vet say happened to Bobo?

I spent approx $2000 in 2006 on Zipper and she didn't make it. :(  Much worse to pay huge bills without a happy outcome.

Glad Bobo is doing well!

LeeAnne my Fifi got sick with pancreatic cancer already had CHF on the same day Barbaro was injured. Fifi went to live with Jesus July 10th. They gave her some horse meds to help so that is why I drew a close bond to Barbaro .....and the fact I picked him to win the derby. What is your prediction on his future?

Barbaro is doing really well.  :)  No one can say what his long term prognosis is yet. His broken leg is healed. It is the other hoof that got Laminitis that is still iffy. He is soon to leave the hospital. :)

terri, the vet diagnosed BoBo with gastroenteritis. We suspect he ate something he shouldn't, but we have no idea what he got into or where. He is completely back to normal and we are so grateful. Years ago we thought our neighbor was nuts for spending $5000 on medical care for their dog, but now we understand. Sort of.

Glad to hear that he's feeling better :) We spent serious money on our dog Midget to find that she had hepatic cancer. The vet botched a liver biopsy and she bled to death. I wish I could forgive the vet but she should have known better and referred us to a university vet experienced in such things...I paid the bill but I doubt I will ever be able to forgive that kind of stupidity..
