Today we painted the sculpture. Started with basic white Decided that didn't provide enough contrast.
Went with brown. Decide that a water creature wouldn't look like dirt.
At the moment she is brown, with blue and green shading.

But that could change.
We have to install her tomorrow at the pool. EEEK, deadlines give me anxiety.

That's insane!!!  Awesome work, I'm always amazed that people can do that kind of thing.  I know I can't!  Everything I try to sculpt becomes an ashtray or a paperweight!  lol
I'm broke and can't afford to pay attention, so you might have to lend me an ear.

Installation was Thursday. A bare week after we brought home the block. :)

Some of the competition. The red hand holding the world, and the splattered song bird were school art projects. :)

It's not like I'm *adverse* to water, but every time I get into a project with Savannah, I seem to spend a lot of time getting wet. :) Or muddy.  >:(-  Or wet and muddy and mosquito-bit. lol

Yesterday we splashed the sculpture, and Savannah was wearing this outrageous dress, so I got the job of getting wet.  Today, I needed her on the bank handing me stuff to stabilize the tail... so into the water I went yet again. :)  And of course, it rained buckets while we were playing with weights and balances... so everything on top of the water was just as soaked as my underwater parts.  {:-P;;  But all floats level, and the issue with the tail is finally handled, so it was worth it.

The sculpture really is neat when you see it live and installed.  I keep looking at the other ones and going "naw... I like Savannah's better".  Funny thing: many of the other entrants are card-carrying artists with studios, shops and galleries.  Savannah is just this chick who got a burr under her nether-regions and decided to convert $300 worth of foam into a mythical horse.  No real plan... just "grab the hotknife and remove everything that doesn't look like a horse".  Not kidding.  And it WORKS!  The real test happened yesterday when a school bus pulls-up and a gaggle of young girls piles-out to preview the "Art On Water" exhibit.  They made a beeline for Savannah's horse sculpture.

Little girls and horses!  It was actually quite gratifying.

BTW:  All my Nerdian waterworks got kibashed.  >:(-  The reflecting pool is a "no-wake" zone.  Oops.  So I've got this water-proof, neutrally-bouyant battery pack with something like 300 amp/hours of 12v power and 4 pumps ready to roll if anyone is needing it.  :blowup: Oy.  {:-P;;

They are advertising it on the radio now. A spokesman was touting a favorite who does bronze sculpture and "her whimsical portrayal of Humpty Dumpty." I think your piece is great and I hope that the judges are fair. That is some fine work.

Sunbeam, that is quite an accomplishment.  The horse - its stance, its face, its muscles - portrays an amzaing power.  Well done!

What are you doing the rest of the festival?  Do you have a booth and are you sitting around to meet the public, like the exhibiting artists do?

No booth, but yeah - participating artists are required to be hanging around. So you can find me in the wine bar. :)
Today should be GORGEOUS weather. In the 70s and relatively dry - meaning not raining buckets.
 lol

The lady who did the spinner heads sculpture is very friendly. So I may follow her around for awhile.
When you meet the artists, they are pretty normal. Sort of disappointing. I'm looking for the Van Goughs...  lol

Update:  The jury has voted.  They don't announce the results formally to the public until Noon, but the artists have all been advised as of 9:00 AM this morning.  Drum-roll please....

SECOND PLACE GOES TO SAVANNAH ROBINSON!!!  @O@ O0 ;D :D

In Tejas-Speak, those emoticons are saying YEEEHAAA!!!!!!  Savannah is positively bouncing.  Last seen she was screaming "Drinks all-around!" and doing cartwheels on the lawn.

The first-place winner was a very pleasant professional artist named Helena with the polar-bear statue.  I didn't catch who took third-place due to the roar of the crowd. :)

Did I mention SR is just flat-out **bouncing**?  lol

Well I'll disagree with the judges. I thought the polar bear was too----quiet, no life, just standing there. Sure it was well done but the horse screamed of life and action. Well anyway, that's my opinion. Congratulations Savannah.

Bouncing? Naw, I;ve never had to empty a bar,  :o

But I am still thrilled. From your armchair, second may not seem so grande. But this is the first sculpture I've done in 30 years, first styrofoam, first public display, AND first art competition.
I am THRILLED to have been in the contest, much less a winner.  @O@  @O@  @O@

A potter who was a very nice lady from New Orleans was trying to compare the techniques you use with styrofoam to those they use when working a clay sculpture. The big difference is that when you pull clay too slow, the wire breaks. When you pull styrofoam too slowly, it burst into flames.  :D
That alone makes it a much more difficult media.

I had such a GREAT TIME. Hanging out and being weird with the artists - who are a pretty normal bunch. But I didn't feel constrained to be anything like normal. You will notice that there are no photos of my hair in this set.  lol
I was trying to go shocking white, as a diguise. but only got as far as neon orange.  lol
It was very fun.

Woooweee!!!!  Congrats Savannah!!!  Your masterpiece turned out fabulously floating in the pool.  Like Esther said I like that your sculpture has life.  The 1st place probably was making a statement as to why the polar bears are going extinct.  :o

You rock!  @O@

Savannah,

I was at the meeting of the Lone Star Koi Club this afternoon, and one of the guys there mentioned he had been at the Art Festival.  I asked if he remembered seeing your sculputer, and he definately did, quite well.  He said it was fantastic.

Congratulations on your win.  That is a MAJOR art show, and it's a juried show, which means an artist can't simply pay his way in - he has to be judged worthy of being there.  So it's a remarkable feat to even be IN the show, and many times more meaningful to WIN!
