perfect container plant
naturally neat shape, a short trunk with a bushy crown, no pruning needed
will bloom right away (unlike big version of Ylang Ylang - Cananga odorata - that will need a few years till blooming)
dwarf growth habit, mature trees up to 5-6 ft tall
much more cold hardier than large Ylang Ylang tree; withstands mild frost once established
low maintenance with regular/standard watering and fertilizing

I wonder if it smells anything like my Michelia (Champaca), also from China.  A local nursery, Mimosa, http://www.mimosanurseryanaheim.com/ carries a lot of Asian exotics.  If you are considering buying the plant you might want to check with them to see if they carry it.  They don't list all their plants on their web page.  The gal that owns this nursery has an ex-husband who owns another nursery carrying similar plants and trees and his nursery is located closer to you in the L.A. area but I can't remember it's name....  I'll ask a friend who took me there if he remembers the name.

I got my Michelia Alba from a friend but she got it from a local Asian food market.  Around Chinese New Year is the best time to find some good specimens of flowering anything that grows well in our area.  Check it out soon!

The blossoms are very fragrant all day long and last a few days easily.  Tree is a bit tempermental when it gets to hot and dry though, it will drop its leaves.
