My most prolific water lily is not in a pot!
« on: March 18, 2010, 03:55:31 PM »
I just discovered it while mucking about in the pond.  I divided it, I will pot the division, but what remains seems very happy and is anchored in a big ball of soil-muck.
I am inclined to leave well enough alone.
What do you think?

I say that if it is happy, leave it. Maybe it will give you lots and lots of blooms. @O@
Happy ponding,

Ask Fernlady about her huge lily that jumped one of her pots?

My colorado has been 3/4 out of its pot for years and blooms prolifically.  I just jump in the pond and break off a few pieces to devide to send to people.  why bother success! :)

What Vickie is talking about my lilie jumping pot.  Took 4 people to drag out of pond. Bet that
thing weighed 300 pounds.  But it was pretty with all those yellow blooms.  I just can't let one
plant be such a pond hog as I need the space.  of course this was a Mexicana.  And I got
rid of all of it, don't want any more Mexicanas either.  Won't let one jump pot that badly again.
this all happened within the space of one year too.  And I doubt that I'm rid of that one, all it
would take would be one very small piece and it could happen again in very same spot.

I used my serrated bread knife  (a great tool) and sawed off a big piece and potted it.
Left most where it was.

If you've got the room to let it grow where ever it wants it'll be quite the happy "monster" lily.

After reading horror stories about mexicana escaping pots, I keep mine in it's own water trough.  If I had the room, I'd plant Lily Pons in dirt on the bottom of a 150 gallon stock tank.  It sure would be happier & produce a lot more blooms.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

All of my lilies were just planted in the rock on the pond bottom for years, then I rebuilt and had a bottom drain added ... now I have to learn how to pot them.  lol

I've had a few jump the pots, makes it easy to give some away.  I have one in the stones that goes wild.
