Possible Lotus Pot
« on: May 24, 2010, 06:19:14 AM »
I have this pot I purchased last year and just don't know what to plant in it.  I was wondering if perhaps I could put a small lotus in it? I have seeds of "Nelumbo Nuficera" just sprouting that I need to pot up.  The opening is an oval about 15" in diameter but the depth of the pot is only about 6" to the bottom of the oval.  I suppose I could put a pot within the pot? What would you do?

Although a nice looking pot, I don't suggest using it for a lotus.  I would think the pads would get stuck in the lip underneath the head plus I don't think it is deep enough.

I didn't think it would work...rats. LOL.  :(   What would be good for lotus seedlings from seed. I don't imagine they'll get very big this year? What kind of pot depth do they like? I'll probably eventually bury containers in the ground and plant them there but for this year?

The frog pot is cool!  But the ladies are right (even though I'm terrible at growing lotus) about the size for lotus.  An array of succulents growing out of the frog's back in my neighborhood would look great!

My lotus has it's first roots it's ready to plant.  I'm probably going to put it in a half barrel....what depth of water do they prefer -should I fill up the half barrel?

Love the pot. But lotuses get huge don't they? Even flowers would look nice. Will it be in the sun or shade?

I grow lotus in pots with anywhere from 6 to 8 inches of water over the top of the pot to 18 inches over the top of my pots. It just depends on where you put them. With a seedling I would only put maybe 4 or 5 inches over the top of the pot so you can watch it better.

Your lotus seeds will produce a plant that will grow full size this summer. The tubers may not be huge, but the lotus will be. You might consider Pink flamingo water celery for your frog, or maybe even parrots feather growing out of it,  but it is definitely too small for even the smallest of lotuses. Nice find, and it will look great once you get it potted up.
