ok so having a go at plumeria cuttings
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:32:45 PM »
after trying some passiflora cuttings i decided i wanted alot of varieties of passiflora as well so i guess i just gotta wait till they become more available... in the mean time i'm trying my hand at plumeria cuttings. i recieved 15... and had stored them for about a month, i found that 4 of them had started to get mushy, and some just at the bottom so i was able to cut off the mushed part and start anew... the others i potted in a mix of perilite and sand... and now they are in my cozy house nearish a heat lamp and accompanied by mental instructiong to leave them alone and not to fuss with them what so ever! cross the fingers friends.  O0

My understanding that the key to growing plumeria from cuttings is to first let the end callous over well to prevent rot and second to have a fast draining soil mix and third to keep that mix with just enough moisture to allow the cutting to take root.  Good luck.

That mental instruction bit will take you far too. I'm always tempted to "just fiddle a little bit"

I've grown them from cuttings and they took at least a couple of years before flowering.  You don't want them to bloom too soon because as soon as they bloom they will branch and you probably don't want branches that low.

I took cuttings from a bought potted plant.  Let the ends dry and stuck them in course mix of soil and pebbles.  Took a few long years to see flowers.  Thanks Mike, I thought it was my not so green thumb when there were no flowers for a few years.  I rarely water them unless they have lots of leaves.

Just make them think they are in Hawaii.  I bought a few they were not much more than cuttings.
The one with a tiny bit of protection did well.

I've bought several a few years ago.  I've found that the white plumeria with the yellow center (smells like citrus) is more prolific bloomer.  My cutting flowered the first year.  I may have had one flower eek out of a yellow plumeria but missed it.  My other plumerias have not flowered yet.  They grow taller every year though.  When I water them more regularly during the growing season the stem is nice and thick.  When I forget and sometimes it shrivels a little bit, the stems are really skinny.  Yes, my stems are a little weird looking now.  They also grow toward the light, so I have to remember to turn the pots.  I don't always remember so some of my stems are very curvy  {:-P;;

so its been three weeks or so, and half the plumies are doing great, you can really see the green tips forming on the end, i read somewhere taht black tipped plum cuttings dont grow... if thats the case i think i have like two of them which arent very colored other than black in the tips... not like death bacteria black, just not bright green... idk.

but oddly enough, i have one, that i had to cut the bottom off because of squish and let it recallus and its just been sitting between clay pots to harden the cut off end... now i mist the plumies and plants around it so thats about the only think water wise.. and its under a constant grow light because i have a red tail boat tank next to it... and this little stalk that has just been laying there on the glass.. well its tip has swollen and little green leaves look like they are forming.. and there are virtually NO roots what so ever.. but the tip is growing. anyone heard of a plant still growing w no roots? idk what to do about it just let it keep cruising?

If you can have them under a glass or plastic dome it will work wonders.  Even one alone in a cut off milk container O0

Michelle,

It is quite common for unrooted cuttings of many species to leaf out (flush).  It may root yet and it may not.  Flushing is not a sign that a cutting has rooted.  A very gentle tug on the stem should tell you whether or not roots have begun to form.  If it resists a little there are roots, if not there are no roots yet.

The top calliflower thing is the cluster of flower buds.  The next cluster down below which is more swordlike are the leaves sprouting.  Funny you are getting flowers before leaves!  I have a green maiden lotus that flowered before the aerial pads came up, so its not that strange I gues... 8)

Yep, you've got both flowers and leaves growing.  I just started a couple branches I got from friends and both of them bloomed before the leaves had opened.  Now they have leaves that are getting larger every day but no more blooms.   Hopefully they will bloom again this summer.

woW! I'm excited! I have a few cuttings that are doing this. Are the blooms like water lily blooms where the first ones aren't as great as the the latter more mature blooms? How long do they flower for? Man I'm freaking stoked!

Here in the tropics most plumeria don't lose all their leaves in the winter but they do slow down and most stop blooming.  The native ones do bloom all year but it is much reduced in the winter.  Right now the plumeria trees, they are huge trees here, are all completely covered in blooms.  My sticks on the roof put out a small bloom cluster first then the leaves grew on the tips of the branches and now I'm waiting to see what they will do next.   Here they are called Flor de Mayo because they really go crazy with the blooms in May.  They bloom from the tip of a branch and when the bloom is done the branch forks and new tips grow out.  I'll take some pics of them, I've been wanting to take the camera out to get a couple of the really fantastic ones around town.
