First "Sweet 100's"
« on: May 24, 2010, 12:30:58 PM »
WHOOOOWEEEEE!  Tomatoes are coming in fast and my first ready to eat are the "Sweet 100's."  Yummmmy!  So much BAMM for a little cherry size tomato!  I think I have at least 15 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes growing in my front garden - hidden from the street.  Three of my plants from last year never stopped producing tomato.  Plus there are a few growing from my compost.  This year I expect to be swimming in delish tomatoes!

Do you have any suggestions for a bumper crop?!

You can't see them to well but this potted tomato plant has 24 tomatoes on it.  I thought it was a "Patio" type
tomato, but it clearly is not.  The odd shaped fruit looks like a Brandywine type.

I read that "Sweet 100s" have the highest Vitamin C content of all!

Our tomatoes are still in the greenhouse. It is too cold and nasty here to plant them out in the garden.  :'(

Most of the tomatoes I'm growing are ready for picking and so far they've been delish!  A new nursery just opened up nearby and gave lots of heirloom tomatoes away to all visitors.  I think I got 9 good size plants to add to my 8 or more tomatoes in the garden.  There is a great variety of heirlooms and I know fresh salsas are not to far off in the distant weeks!  Cilantro and basil growing like crazy too.  Just need to corral them long enough to use with tomatoes........ 8-)~

How wonderful to have all those maters  @O@ Do you have mortgage lifter, or beef heart? I have some heirloom seeds too, I should have started them in the GH :( I will have to start earlier next spring :) If you have time, could you please list which ones you have?

Tootsie, shame on you for forgetting the tomatoes!  They are the easiest plants to yield fruit/vege for me, not including the tree variety.  This year I lucked out as a new nursery was giving away heirloom tomato plants (got about 10 plants).  In all 15 plus 2 Hillbillies that planted themselves from seeds that were in the compost.  {:-P;; O0
My favorite tomato is the Hillbilly, fabulous meaty humongous and beautiful!
The usual heirloom tomatoes:
Hillbilly - Huge, yellow-green-orange with starburst pink/red inside, sweet and meaty
Sunburst - Cherry, orange tomato candy! Crazy grower, tons of candy
Pear - Pear shaped cherry, yellow
Brandywine Red - Round dark red, serious flavor
Cherokee Purple - Planted last year and still around, dark red and solid

New heirlooms from new nursery:
Green Zebra - Green yellow zigzag colors, zangy flavor
San Diego - Pinkish red, non tangy
Brandywine Black - like the name
Japanese Black - Extremely fruitful and dark, tasty
Japanese Black Truffle - Similar to Japanese Black (sounds decadent!)
100 Sweet - Cherry, red and so many!
Black Krim - Small black, strong flavor
Black Plum - Tons of black/red, egg shaped, tasty
Kellogg - Yellow orange flesh, a bit tart but meaty
And if I could remember the rest I would list them  :D

We are knocking on neighbors doors to take some of the yield off our hands but eating lots of tomatoes ourselves!  Tomatoes and oranges are the best I do!  This photo only shows the first to yield.  Now....I should take some photos.  ;)

I am growing Russian black tomatoes again this year. They did well for me last year. I have finally put them out and they are just starting to bloom. Fortunately they mature fast.
I'm impressed that yours are ready to eat!

Wow, those look delicious!  I have a basil plant that looks like a bush--so it's tomato/mozarella/basil pesto pasta salad... 8-)~

I only did ok this year at best,  The "Porterhouse" from Burpess is a failure so far.
We do have many tomatoes, but all small.  None of the "hamburger " sized ones I hoped for :'(

Maybe sticking to what works locally is the way to go?

Thanks Maryvonne and LuAnn!  We are starting to red up here with the bit of heat we have been receiving and the tomatoes are busting out!  It's fun to try new varieties of tomatoes and I know which ones I won't be doing again next year.  Especially if I have to pay for them!  :P

I added a few more to my list of toms I saw the names of last evening.  O0

I'm not one for the beefsteak toms but I think my Hillbillies fit the bill for us.  Jerry, the first month my tomatoes were ripening they were small too but now....stop the press!  ;D

Last evening after a terrific 4th of July barbecue and too much sun I had to go out and pick ripe tomatoes, before Mr. Squirrel does.  There were so many Sunburst cherries and Sweet 100's, Japanese Black and Japanese Black Truffles, Green Zebras, and most decadent of all, the Hillbilly.

I have to apologize for the poor focus but my eyes were fried from all the sun yesterday....I know where were my sunglasses.  Whole other story!

Here's one of the big Hillbilly.  I'll have to get a shot of a sliced one later.  They are as tasty as they are beautiful.

Here is a photo of Hillbillies all sliced in half.  One green zebra, lower right, small all green, tomato.  Had fresh tomato pureed soup tonight.  Great for a chilly night!

It seeme a few pear tomatoes and "Early Girl" are my only successes this year.  Still hoping for Porterhouse from Burpee's to make it.  I just planted a few "Celebrities"  Maybe we need to plant Mel Gibson?

Yummm Annette!!  Those look delicious.  Nothing like produce from your own garden.  We have zillions of cucumbers and onions for refrigerator pickles.  Broccoli, squash, basil, parsley, rosemary--I love being able to walk out the door for fresh herbs too and it's right at my fingertips when I want to use it!!   8)

I agree, LuAnn, that it's such a great feeling to be able to grow and pick your own veges and fruits.  I wish I had more garden to grow half as many things you do!  I'm already planning for next year's vege garden.  Gonna build me some raised garden plots  O0  Hopefully be more organized and plant stuff at the right time.  :D
