Nymphaea immutabilis, an Australian tropical waterlily
« on: July 18, 2010, 10:56:45 AM »
I had the wonderful opportunity to spend some time with Richard Sacher many years back and for only the second time since 2002 when I acquired this plant from Rich, I finally have the opportunity to enjoy another bloom. Rich had received seed of this immutabilis from Andre Leu and grew out a few. Richard gave me the tuber from this one and I had taken the plant to Craig Presnell who I had made a side trip to visit after staying with Kit and Ben. I actually thought I had lost this stunning beauty so am very pleased to see it make a reappearance. I'm interested in trying my had at a intersubgeneric cross, now if my white colorata would just cooperate and put up some blooms.

Cheers,
Sean

Hey Sean:

Nice photo I always thought the Austrailian Waterlilies needed a lot of room, the photo implies that the Dixie cups work with these water lilies too.

Cheers,

Gary

That has been one of my favorite lilies for a long time.  Someday I might even get to grow one!

Beautiful picture. o(:-)

I'm totally intimidated by all that name slinging and large words that I don't understand, so I'll just enjoy that gorgeous lily and leave the breeding ya-ya to you guys that know what you're doing!  Just beautiful!   O0

Sean, as you know, I am not experienced at all with lilies, but I know what I like. That one is interesting as it has the rounded petals more like a lotus and the extreme color difference from the outside petals and the inner ones is very cool.

SKarol98, welcome to our bunch. Hope you enjoy it here.

I can't really answer your question but a lot will depend on the condition of what you bought. If it is a dried up tuber, it might not even be alive. Has it shown any sign of life? If it was planted early this summer and sent up pads right away, it might blossom this summer. Depends too on if you fertilized, and if it gets the kind of sun exposure it wants and if it likes the soil you started it in. A lot of this stuff we jabber about has different behaviors for different people. Mostly, I'd say to have patience. It's like that old saying of the watched pot that never boils.

The colour is accurate, I am happy to see additional buds on the rise, one of which has already breached the surface.

This is the second bloom. yesterday it was quite small when it opened for the first time, today it is almost double the size The petals are longer than the sepals now as well. Amazing plant.

I did not know that blooms can still get larger once they have already opened. Is that the same for other water lilies or only this one?

Sean- what are those two glass spheres in the background for?
