Turtle musings. I think I figured it out.
« on: August 01, 2010, 08:47:57 AM »
My wife woke me this morn to tell me a big turtle was about to escape,  This has happened many times, perhaps 8 !  How can she be so lucky?  Conclusion:  She can't!  (she married me  lol)
I think the "escapees" have come and gone with out our ever knowing about it!!!

Re: this mornings "escapapade" (a new word) I walked with her gently herding her toward the pond.
She dove in.

Jerry, since you can command turtles to follow you -- how about coming to my place,
conjuring that turtle out of my big pond. He is alive, well fed, happy!! But I'm not
happy as can't put my tropicals in there. He has no appetite for hardies, just
tropicals.

You give me too much credit.  I merely herded her.

"Turtle trainer" a very important old painting. Posting just because I like it much and has something to do with turtles. Nothing else :)

Artist was Osman Hamdi Bey, also an archeolog and a museum founder and director of some cultural institutions of that time.

As was common that time through the Oriantalist painters, he also did 2 versions of this painting in 1906 and 1907. Were some small differences such as 5 turtles in the 1st and 6 turtles in the 2nd version and a water jug and window decoration was added.

On his back, he is carrying a reed flute.
There are different stories told about the painting. Mostly it is said that the trainer is he himself, tired of guiding the people around him for better training and better cultural levels and therefore gave up blowing his flute any more and let the people around to be satisfied to eat what they have around. Who knows:))

Painting was re-sold to 9 million usd in 2009.

Below is the first version

Thank you for the background on the artist, Tugrul.  How fascinating:  the difference in the two pictures.  I acually prefer the second version of the picture and enjoy looking for the subtle differences of the two.  I especially like the deep blue wall with his contrasting clothing... :)
