pond being over run
« on: October 02, 2010, 04:38:38 PM »
i would say it is some kind of algae.it is stopping up my filters over flowing them and ever thing in the pond has it on it.the water temp is down to 70.i cant see the bottom or the fish tell they are almost to the top.water has been fairly clean until this started happen a few days ago.the temps have been dropping here.i thought  that the algae would die off as the water got cold?did a water check and every thing is in the proper levels.

Sounds like "String Algea." Try a search for prior threads or hang on for answers from members.
For me getting the stuff in the shade worked.  I am told it will pass on it's own too.

Is it stringy or lumpy?

I don't know. Again, also thinking string algae. I don't remember where you are located but if it stays warm there,,,,,don't let this stuff take over. One late spring, early summer, I did that and it was a real mess to get rid of. The fish barely could swim through these little tunnels. We eventually got in the pond and left 5 gallon buckets on shore. We bent over and stretched our arms and fingers down as far as we could reach and twirled them around to break it loose by handsful. We squeezed the water out and pitched globs of it into the buckets. We then used our handy long handled handle (lol) with the toilet brush on it to brush off the rocks and get in crevasses. We let it filter a few days, scrubbing off what more we could and rinsing the filter media frequently.  WE then used a couple of doses of an algae preventative CAREFULLY, continuing to clean the filters. Each year since, we've had a little bit but if I think it's getting out of hand, (ducking) I again carefully use the Algaefix.

Hmmm, doesn't sound like string algae. That is stringy and when you have a handful, it feels like you have a glob of very fine thread to wring out. It isn't slimey until it starts to die.

that lumpy stuff seems to grow in still waters at the edges of ponds or pools.... could standing or stagnant water be possible in your pond?

Perhaps too much nitrogen in the water, for the algae to feed off of?

STOP FEEDING THE FISH!  Clean out some of the gunk in your filter box.  Takes time for the algae to cycle out so be patient.  I like to use polyester quilt batting in a basket to catch all the debris that flows out of the filter box too.
