Help picking a pump/filter system, please
« on: March 25, 2011, 10:36:16 AM »
I'm now trying to figure which pump and filter to get. I found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290449242122&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en#ht_3895wt_989 filter, (my pond is roughly 2500 gallons). It seems to be a good price. What pump would work with it? Do you guys have any suggestions for a better brand/filter? Help please! See what happens to me when I never plan anything out? This is what I get, . Thanks, guys~

ETA: I added this in pond chat and here. Don't know where it would best belong. Sorry.

I'd agree with you,
But then we'd both be wrong....

Oh, yes. One other thing. Do I want a submersible or out of pond pump? Thanks.

Although the size of the filter may be adequate (depending on fish load), the listing does not give the brand name or if is a model that is no longer manufactured. It also does not say what the maximum flow rate is (determines pump size). Too much info missing.
Do you have a skimmer? This would be an essential item, especially if your pond is subject to leaf drop or other organic debris.

a good start would be the perfect biological filter may suggest this http://www.skippysstuff.com/biofiltr.htm
then all you need is a good pump, look for one that will completely turn over the a mount of water in your pond in 24 hours. Keep in mind that if your pond is very deep you need to have a pump on the bottom as well as a skimmer pump and they both should pump to the filter. good luck and post pix as you go.

Hi, if your any good at DIY the sand and gravel filter would be a good choice for that size pond. You could run it bd to pump to S&G back to the pond by waterfall. And if you have a skimmer just T it in the bd line before the pump, just be sure to valve both bd and skimmer lines so you can regulate the flow. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.  Dan

Welcome West Texas,

We live in North Texas and have a 13 year old, no-fish (except Gambusia's that eat mosquito larvae),  EPDM lined, 2000<> gallon nature pond.  My exiting aged in-pond pump & out-of-pond filter is being replaced with newer, more efficient components.   I am coordinating the change over at the same time as having the pond professionally cleaned.  This year I am going to use a leaf net since our pond is in full shade during the spring and summer.

I agree with Bruce. Love the S&G.
