Firefox - The beginning
« on: June 10, 2011, 12:44:42 PM »
I received this tuber yesterday. The only sign of life was a small (1/16") hair like tendril. Late yesterday afternoon the tendril had grown enough to discern a leaf.  This morning three leaves. Wow. The tag is 1" wide.

I have Foxfire. I have never seen it put out a tuber in two years. I did think it was a goner this year after all the cold weather we had. It is back and blooming.  You will love that lily. You better have a large space for it because the pads alone are large. Keep showing pics of its progress!

What do you have it planted in?

Wow, that's some fast growth.  Hope it continues to do well for you.  Looks like you are using sand?

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

Doing it a little different this year. Following hints from Craig.  A lily pad leaf covering holes in the pot. 2"-4" peat in the bottom of the pot. Cover with sand half way, then lots of fertilizer. What's left of last years 1000 Pond tabs, mostly powder now. When the tabs are gone, I will probably use slow release fertilizer. Way cheaper. Plant lily and cover with sand. For years I used spillway sand. Last two years I used play school sand cause it easy. The lilies clean up very easily. This may not be the best soil for lilies.  Other than roots in the muck, it's the easiest. The 5 hardies I have are in clay though. I have not tried them in sand.

I took photos Saturday afternoon but none were clear enough to post.  It appear to my old eyes that multiple plants are forming.

That's pretty impressive! I've had trouble growing Foxfire. I got one later in the season last year and it pouted after being mailed and died on me after the winter.  No tuber.  I got another one this year from a different source and also earlier in the season, and so far it is still alive and has a few fresh pads. So far looks good.  I will be extremely happy if I get to see a bloom this season. I've seen everyone's pics of this lily and it looks great, I just want to see it in person for myself  ;)

I think that your tuber of Foxfire is particularly vigorous. Definitely a keeper!  O0
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!

This is my second try at growing Firefox. The first one came as a small tuber late in the year. The next year it stayed small but did flower. Both came in trades with two ladies who have been very nice to me.

From two years ago so I am hoping.
