Turtles like Mackeral!! Mike was right...
« on: April 03, 2012, 08:07:56 AM »
The water temp is barely 60 and they are eating with a vengence. :'(  This is why I wanted an Amazonia with its thorn like stems and underside.
I don't mind them eatiing the stems that much, but at this rate there won't be much left.  Once the plants catch up there is plenty for all.  Will they get established?

Anyone know a lilly that turtles don't like?

They're hungry !  Feed them !  Lots of meat. Canned mackeral is great. Once they get full and and start to gain weight they will lay off the lilies.  Fill their stomachs with high fat, high protien food and they will just lay around in the sun. Just like we do. Sliders really don't like waterlilies.

I don't know which lilies they don't like but I do know which ones they DO like. Ladekery Fulgens is the favorite with Carolina Sunset a close second.  Any time they start eating my waterlilies I just feed them high protien-fat fish food and they stop. That is their way of saying, feed me.

They are making eggs now and and you have a new kind of turtle now. Big pregnant females in spring.

I did give them mackeral!  The pices on the rock they went after like vultures. They have yet to spot the stuff on the bottom.
Mike. I have no lake like you do and have concerns about fouling the water.
I have shiners too and think they will clean up.

 Something will eat it .

Your turtles are going to have a whole new opinion of you now that they know that you have such treasure.

They will be looking at you with that " where's the mackeral " look.

When I lived at the other place, I had six mud bottomed ponds and turtles in all of them.   I fed them every day, and if they ever ate any waterlilies, I couldn't tell.   I think they just laid around and waited on me.   I feed about 20 turtles in the bayou now.   It's funny.   At first there were one or two, but somehow, word spreads and at last count there were 20.

Nice story!
I don't mind them eating plants, but i would like them to let the plants recover from winter.
