Input strainers for larger pumps ?
« on: May 28, 2011, 08:34:41 PM »
I am wondering what others are doing for larger pumps especially external ones.

The idea of using the pump after the filter has some appeal.

I don't have a strainer on mine...it sits behind my machanical pump and it is a gravity fed system so I didn't have the need for one...

As a general rule, an external pump should have some sort of strainer basket. When I had 6 Koi ponds, the only external pump that burned out on me was the only one without a strainer. And all of them followed a gravity fed settlemt chamber, vortex, or biofilter.

The one that did burn up was a Grunfos recirculating pump. Admittedly not often used for Koi ponds. But it drew very little amps and moved a lot of water! What killed it was little more than a small bit of string algea. Those pumps were made for clean water.

Unless whatever section your pump is drawing from is always covered, there's always be a chance of something getting in and heading for the pump.

Guess that's why so many external pumps are bundled with an intake strainer. If not, they usualy tell you which one can be added to the pump.

I just think having one is a good idea.

How large of a pump do you have?

The other posters are correct.  Most have a strainer/leaf basket option.  Or, for very large external pumps there are intake screens you can place in the pond as well. You can check out some of the ones I have listed here: http://www.diywatergardening.com/pond-pump-foam-pre-filters

I have a leaf basket at the skimmer. My external Sequence brand has a priming pot as well as a basket within.

I have three external pumps but none of them are installed yet.  One is a 1000gph from a defunct fish store.  One is a new sequence but I forget the GPH, maybe 4000gph, and the 3rd is from an above ground swimming pool.

I have read the pool pump will be expensive to run so it maybe used as a booster pump to increase flow over a water fall.

Your right that pool pump will be expensive to run. There are a lot of low rpm pumps to choose from. My preference is the performance pro cascade, I can add an extra large leaf basket if Iwant. The pumps are a little expensive but worth the extra money. I've had one running for 8yrs with no problems. Good Luck          Dan

I intend to use the pool pump as a booster to increase flow over the falls.  It will only run as needed for viewing.
