New hybrid seedlings started...
« on: February 25, 2007, 09:45:45 AM »
I decided to try another batch of seed I had sitting in the fridge that is many years old. What do you think came up, seedlings of course :2thumbs:

The first one to breach the surface is a solid green pad but I figure I will keep it anyway, I generally try to only keep the most heavily variegated pads but I remember the parents of this batch of seed to have been high petal count plants so I need to see now if the seedlings here will share those great characteristics.

You might notice in the photo that there are other seedlings in there just forming underwater rosettes. A couple of those appear to have variegated foliage.

Cheers,
Sean

Sean, when I was cleaning a tank the other day, I found some seedlings.   They were quite small, but had variegated pads.  I was surprised to see them this time of year.   I guess they sprouted last fall and have just been hanging in there in the cold water.

Good luck with your seedlings.   I've grown out a few, and they are pretty, but nothing to "write home about."

Hi Marilyn,

I too have seedlings that are sending up pads outside from last year. I expect they formed the tiniest of tubers and are just coming back to life now that the day length is getting longer. I expect the same is happening for you.

Lol.....seems like everyone is going to have to first deal with last year's seedlings....I got a pond full of ones I'll need to cull and my first pod of seeds for this year burst the other day...only maybe four or five mature seed, always a good sign.<g>

I like the deep colour of those pads Craig!

How do you decide at this point what to cull?

That is a lot of seedlings.

Up close they are not as homogenous looking as they appear in the photo.  And I am still searching for my 'white whale', the pink Midnight, so pinks are getting picked preferentially.

Someday I'm going to get this lily and it is not going to revert to a single type bloom!

That photo looks like an odd mutation on Charlies' Pride.

Cheers.

I was thinking the same thing Sean. The coloring looks close but it has the great petal count like King of Siam. Great Lily.

What does that mean if you don't mind explaining.

It appeared in my Charlie's Pride pond, so I agree it is either a seedling or sport.  The problem with it Tim is that what you see in the picture is the onset of blooming.  Conventional wisdom holds that flowers improve as the plant matures....no this one!  By about the six flower or so it invariable reverts to a standard issue CP.

I am glad this thread came up though...I hadn't thought to look for it yet this year and for obvious purposes it is the CP of choice for crosses.  Not only found it ( labeled 'Super Pride'<g>) but was shocked to see how well the CP crop had multiplied!  If I'd noticed earlier I could have had some good to go for this year's list.

I love this forum, however my favorites is the hybridizing section.
This is of great interest to me.
In one of my seedling tanks, i noticed that almost overnight, pads were rotting from fungus. of course i panicked, too much time and money goes into this extravagant hobby of mine. i picked all pads that were bad and introduced a small amount of fungicide into the water and have been spraying the pads with a light solution of the same.
it seems to have stopped for now but some of the pads are slightly distorted, not sure why.  the other tanks are fine. hopefully i can get them all out into the greenhouse next month.

thats a fine looking bloom, craig. good luck with your seedlings. how long before you will see a bloom from that batch.
