Spring is on its way!
«

. I went into winter with one goldfish and thirteen koi. Coming into spring I have seen the goldfish and eleven koi. I'm thinking I might have lost two koi even tho I haven't found any bodies floating.
My pond is starting to warm up, bottom of the pond has been anywhere from 42.1 to 43.5 lately. I went into winter with string algae and figured it would die over the winter but no such luck. Now that the sun is starting to shine more it's starting to grow again. My pond is pretty new, started it July 4, 2010. My plan is trying to put as many plants into the pond to eat up all the nutrients.

Keep in mind that it is roots in the water that eat up the nutrients. Potted plants do not.

Is spring really on its way? Here is a link to the hummingbird map, which shows the dates of the reported first sightings of hummingbirds as they migrate north. The first page is the reporting as of today. There is horizontal list of years where you can see what the reported sightings were as of this date in that year. Click on 2012 and see where the hummingbirds were last year this date. Easiest way to see the difference is to look at the extent of the red dots (March). Quite a difference.

Even the hummingbirds know that spring has long time to go.

Spring isn't on the way here in southcentral PA. Weatherman said on tonight's news that we are a month behind in temps. Going to get down to 26 tonight - ouch!
High temps have been in the 40's instead of the 60's. :'(

Same here in northern Illinois -- going down to 23 tonight!
South central PA? I was born in Altoona in 1943.

Our temps were down to 33* last night, but the next 10 days the temps are to be up some, and so far there are no nights expected to be down in the 30s. Maybe spring will get here before the fall.

Yesterdays high was 35* and 32* now and spitting snow.
Good news, it is suppose to be mid 70's all weekend.
Out of curiosity yesterday, I checked and we are closer to North Dakota than we are the Gulf of Mexico.

Sue, is that closer by distance or temperature? Glad your temps are going to be higher. Hopefully, warmer days will come and stay.

In distance.
North Dakota is zones 3 and 4, we are zone 6 in the Texas panhandle and in Victoria where my sister lives, they are in zone 9.

Wow! Sue, you are expecting snow tomorrow? And the distance shows how big the state of Texas actually is from one side to the other, and top to bottom. I am going to be working in Houston next week, which is close to the gulf.

The weather has been very strange this year. We get a rollercoster where we will be in the 80s then get a week where we are in the 60s in the day and 40s at night. Or it can swing as such from Monday through Friday with the midweek being the 60/40 but in the 80s at the beginning and end of the week. So hard to plan when to divide and such.
