I will not be online much due to a severe virus I downloaded stupidly yesterday. I need to fix it since it is sending out email from my computer. If any of you have recieved an email with an attachement from me, DO NOT OPEN IT!!!

I will let you all know more as I work out different ways to cleanse my computer.

Cheers,
Sean

Goodl luck sean!  I had one a month or so ago.. very wicked... I worked for days trying to get rid of it, change registry keys back etc and in the end ended up fdisking and starting over.... surpising how fast and well your computter works after a reformat and starting over, I have it on my to do list once a year :)

.. just a pain in the butt to have to copy it all and then reinstall.

My McAfee antivirus was asking me to purchase an upgrade yesterday and I stupidly opened something I just knew I shouldnt but figured I could fix it if anything went wrong, well 24 hours later, no such luck. I have loaded a second copy of Windows XP on a partitioned drive on my computer and am able to access the internet again but not the original instance of Windows.

I will work on it over the following days, I have been able to remove the virus but it changed a whack of system files which is keeping me from being able to get back in. I can access my files and folders so if I need to reformat, I will not loose anything but time reinstalling all the drivers and programs.

man that is something.. my subscription from norton's had ran out and I had to uninstall it to reintall nort 2007 and in that small time I got my virus.. hehehe... both of us got bammed trying to install virus protection :)

I know everyone loves burners and flash drives and extra but for me I love having multi drives on my computter.  I make it a habit of only having the OS system on drive c.  I store any pictures, stuff I dont want to lose on other drives.  ALot of programs I use I run from other drives and even after formats they still run.  Some require reinstallation but having the other drives for me is a lifesaver as I alm always gonna COPY all the valuable cant lose stuff tomorrow and never do.

I will start reformatting later this evening. I am in the process of backing up everything I need to a separate hard drive now. I know it will be a pain in the arse, it will take at least a week to get my computer to working as well as it was but at least I am not losing anything this time around.

Good luck getting it all put back together, I know it is a big job and tedious.

I've used both McAfee and Norton and I think the free version of Grisoft AVG is better. Certainly uses much less resources. I've been using it about three years now.

That's interesting LeeAnne.  Can I ask why you like Grisoft AVG better?  I may have to look into it.

I use AVG free as well and I use the antispyware from AVG for free It works well with both XP and Vista and I have yet to have a problem it did not detect and repair. Can't go wrong with AVG. Ever since Symantec scr&w&d me out of 18 months of service I refuse to use them ever again. As an IT I recommend AVG Price is right and it is a Great product.

Sean, I feel your pain, at the begining of last year I ran my "ad aware" program, it asked me to update my definitions (like I had done many times before), as soon as I did, I knew something was wrong (2 porn pop ups on my explorer window). I lost everything on that computer. Now the new story, that computer was my last windows machine that I had at the house, it was a dell that I basicaly paid all of my bills with and ran my quicken program with, I have been slowly switching over to macs over the last 5 years, but I did not want to switch over all of the information manually (a lot of account numbers, addresses, etc.), plus I just wanted to have a windows machine for backup. Fast forward to now, I have totaly switched over, none of the 5 macs we have in the house (my 17" powerbook, my imac, wifes imac, daughter's imac, and other daughters ibook) have any virus protection, nor have we had any problems as of yet, the computers come with a multitude of programs (website software, photo/music/movie/dvd software, etc.), and are cross platform compatible, I could go on and on, but just thought it may be something  you would want to consider, especially in todays day and age. Good luck with the reformat as well!

My condolences Sean. I swear virus protection is a headache. We used Norton, McAfee, Trend, AVG....Norton didn't catch them all. I go to house calls and run an online scan just for safe keeping.

hate to hear about your virus sean.  good luck on your reformat.  i got a bad virus recently,  and the computer had been given to me a year earlier so it was no great loss to me.  i told my mother right before christmas that i was going computer shopping and she told me she didn't know what to get me for christmas so pick one out and it was on her.  of course she knew i was not going to go kooky on the price anyway.  i have had em all, gateway, dell, hp and a compaq laptop too.  i went with a new hp that is lightning fast and i love it.  it ended up being slightly more than a thousand dollars.  great gift O0
anyway i have used all of those antivirus except for the gris.   i have gotten a virus or have heard of someone who had gotten one from all of them at one time or another.   my last virus was on avg.  i am using the pay version of zone alarm right now and it is doing great so far.  i am sure none of them are virus proof at one time or another.
i have also discovered the wonder of flash drives.  easy to use and they store so much.  i have learned one thing for sure...quit storing so much on the computer and do more on flash drives.  no fear of losing anything then.

Hi Jerry,
Flash Drives or Jump Drives, are a fantastic little invention. Everyday they come out with one that has more gigs than the last one.
Basically it is a very small (in size) hard drive. Totally portable, about the size, for the most part as wide as your thumb, and just a little bit longer. Lots of computer geeks wear them on a lanyard around their necks.
The first one I had was only a 256 mb drive, and held not enough, of course. I am not sure how many gigs the biggest ones are now, but everyone in the family has one, I got them for all of the boys for Christmas. And the reason for that, is that over time, they have dropped so much in price, you can buy them for a very low price!
I now have one that is 2 gigs, and holds a lot. So, for the most part, instead of using the hard drive that sits at home, I keep a lot of files on the jump dirve, and can carry it with me, just in case someone wants to see photos of my pond, or shepherd!! LOL.
Oh yeah, and they are very easy to use, they plug into the USB port, and you can click and drag your files onto them.

frogger said it perfectly.  this sundays ads there were lots of flash/smart drives really cheap. i got 2 gig for 29.96. how can you beat that.  they are amazing for ease of use.  i got my 70 year old mother 2 gig too and she loves them too.  i think they are one of the best things for computers that i have seen in years.  good luck jerry.

I purchased 2 of these 4gig ones back in December, one for myself and one for a friend, they work great! I can store my whole websites domain files on one flash drive! And they are 10 bucks cheaper now than when I bought them:

Man that sucks.  I have had the same kinds of problems in the past.  I was also using Norton.   I found that it slowed my computer way down.  I still have a year left on my subscription, but decided to go ahead and switch to AVG.  So far haven't had any problems and my computer is much faster.  Go figure.  Hope you get your computer up and running.
