Snoring
« on: March 03, 2007, 06:08:29 PM »
Well, DH kept me awake the last two night snoring.....been real lazy today just getting here.  Guess he'll have to try some of those breathe right strips or something.

I have worn ear plugs to bed for over a year now. We both sleep a lot better now.

Honey....my dh snores so bad.  One year we went to my Uncles BIG cabin at the lake.  (has 8 bedrooms).  Well, he was snoring so bad, everyone teased him the next day.  They all could hear him in their rooms with our door shut and theirs.  I don't think any body believe me on how bad he snored.  He sleeps on the couch now, has for the past 3 years because of the snoring.  I keep saying I'm going to have a sleep study done on him.  He stays so tired, he jerks in his sleep, talks in his sleep and sometimes wonders in his sleep.  If he sits down for 5 minutes, he falls asleep no matter where he is.  I've seen him fall asleep sitting straight up in the floor, and I've seen him fall asleep standing up, yes standing up.  I thinks its all to do with him snoring and not resting.  I've also noticed him when he's sleeping that sometimes he gets really still and you can't tell he's even breathing, I think he's got that sleep apnea also.  I've heard that snoreing is really bad on your heart.  I've got to get him an appointment for that sleep study.  He also stays so grumpy all the time.

Then we have our boy pug that snores.  He's really loud also, you can hear him through out the house.  And think, I got another one...lol

So, I can really relate to you on someone that snores bad.

Kim

Kim,
It is really imperative that you get your DH in for the sleep study. You are right The risk of having a heart attack is very real. When my husband had his study they were surprised that he hadn't already had one because he lost his oxygen saturation so frequently and it dropped so low for so long. Once he was fitted for a CPAP he felt so much better. The headaches, restless leg problems and fatigue disappeared. Insurance paid for the study and the CPAP. It's a scary thing.

I'll go buy some ear plugs. Kim I agree make your hubby get checked out. I lost a friend to the same kinda of stuff. I know that is scary but that is how it happened. Al would just fall asleep wherever and they found him gone.

My husband snores something terrible also, you can here him from accross the house and upstairs.  Tried the earplugs, but all I could hear was like that blood wooshing noise, that was worse, so I just try to fall asleep before him.

Bob snores like a freight train too and I've slept in the "spare" room for almost a decade because of it. He thinks I should be able to ignore it and blames me for sleeping in the other room. I am a light sleeper and I am disturbed by him from the other room and there is a bath in between. He goes to bed before me too and when he is sawing logs I'm not even going to try to sleep with him.

He went on a work trip awhile back and when he woke up his boss wasn't in the other bed in the room, he had gone down to the front desk and got his own room at 1:30am and Bob never woke up.

I don't think Bob has Sleep Apnea, he doesn't have the other symptoms. I actually did a sleep study last year because I have most of the symptoms but my apnea wasn't bad enough for a CPAP machine. My father and two unrelated brothers in law all use them.

My internal medicine doctor sent me to a pulmonary specialist who asked a ton of questions and did some tests before sending me to the sleep lab. It is expensive so they don't send you if they don't think it is necessary but it is also serious to let Sleep Apnea go untreated.

One comment on sleep apnea:

An older gentleman that I knew had sleep apnea and had the operation to fix it.
I don't know the details but do know that was nothing short of amazing.

It was AMAZING!!!! It worked - You all might just want to think about it.

I know I snore badly too - could be why I am still single.  As a public service, I try to stay awake on long distance flights as long as I can, so everyone else has a chance of nodding off before I start sawing logs.

my oldest bro now has heart damage from undiagnosed sleep apnea..and he even had the testing done previously

I wake myself up lately with wheezing/snoring/whistling because of asthma/allergies/congestion/cold.  Seem to finally be getting better, but I slept in the chair so I could sleep and hubby could sleep

My biggest bro snored like crazy.  His wife made him go to the dr and he found out he had sleep apnea.  He didn't have any operation, but sleeps with some kind of machine and she says it is like a miracle.  He's thrilled too because he can now stay awake all day without dozing off every time he sits still.  The machine isn't big or cumbersome and I haven't a clue what it does, but it works.

My dh snores - well maybe not snores so much as clicks - but either way it's irritating.  I learned long ago to sleep with a pillow under my head and another over it . . . . works until the pillow falls off.   I like it tho because it not only keeps out the noise of his snoring it keeps out all other noises and keeps my head warm when it's cold.  Think I might find some earplugs before it gets hot this summer tho . . . . worth a try!

I like the way Steve thinks too.  I'm so use to sleeping alone now, I wouldn't know what to think.

My cousin has the machine and its helped her alot.  I told him I was going to make him an appointment and he said alright.  So, I guess I better get the insurance book out and start calling.  If it will help him rest, so he's not so grumpy and snappy, it will be well worth it.

The CPAP machine blows air into your nose and mouth keeping the airways open. My father says it is a miracle as do my brothers in law and two male friends who use them. Sleep Apnea happens when you stop breathing, often from excess flesh in the nose or throat area relaxes and blocks the airway.

My hubby went thru the sleep study.  Stopped breathing every 7 seconds.  Has a CPAP now and he gets some rest.  Have him tested please.

Mercy, there must be a lot of people who have problems sleeping and sleeping together.

I worked with a gal whose husband and she both did those sleep studies and both ended up with the CPAP machines. They both swore they felt so much better after that.

I also am awakened easily but since I've been wearing the sponge earplugs, everything is OK. The phone hadn't better ring in the night though. I won't hear it.

Wow this is not where I thought I would talk about this in this forum. Kay is right as well as Cindy and the others... Quick story.
While still in the Navy one of fellow Chiefs said I snored bad. At first I was in denial because no one else said anything. my LW (Lovely Wife) is Deaf and could not hear me regardless of how loud it was. I decided to get it checked. I did indeed have Sleep apnea but only a mild case. I had surgery done to correct it BUT that only lasted 6 months. FFwd 6 years. On my way home from an event with my sons in the car, I fell asleep at a stop light. Luckily nothing happend (good thing my guardian angel was on the ball) During the last 6 mile stretch I woke up to my son yelling at me, asking me if something was wrong. I knew I needed help then. Turns out I had a bad case of sleep apnea. my blood oxygen would drop all the way to 69 percent while I was sleeping. My body would wake itself up (up out of REM sleep) 270 times a night. I had short term memory issues, concentration issues, I was always exhausted. Sleep apnea and the lack of Oxygen puts a huge strain on the heart and will eventually cause heart failure.  Here is some great infor. Out of the 20 symptoms listed I had 15 of them. Get him in to see his Family Doc and get him referred for a sleep study. It can take awhile to get the actual study done and if he has it, he is playing with fire by not going. Read through this info and take from someone who has been there and done that, by the 3rd night on the CPAP he will be a new man.

Hmmm, maybe I am doing the wrong thing by wearing the earplugs. My Dh complains of having no energy and he can sleep on the couch just about any time he isn't working. HMMMM maybe we'd better call the Dr and make an appointment. I thought he was depressed but either way the doctor might be able to help.

Watch him when he sleeps does he appear to stop breathing and then gasp for air? Every time he does that it increases pressure on the heart. Please if you even suspect it have it checked out.
I forgot to add something to my last post. Just as a point of reference. My Cardiopulminologist told me this. IF you were to hold your breath until you reached the point that you passed out (because your body pulls an override on your brain in order to force you to breathe) how low do you think your blood oxygen gets? 90 percent! it will only allow a drop to 90%. Sleep apnea sufferers routinely drop to the low 70's their body enters a fight or flight mode and the adrenaline starts pumping. His Organs are trying to survive and they all wake up (enter the active state) then he wakes up long enough to constrict his throat muscles and breathe once he has enough oxygen he drops back into rem sleep and the process starts all over. Yeah I was a typical guy and figured what was a little snoring. Little did I know it could lead to much greater and dangerous things.

See if your doc will send home a pulse oximeter that records the Oxygen levels. he can get the data downloaded and review it to see where your DH's Blood oxygen level is through out the night.
