Have you ever had a heron visit at this time?
« on: March 04, 2007, 04:56:43 PM »
We have had a pesky heron coming around for the past two years. He usually shows up either dawn or dusk.  Half of the pond is now netted, and the other half has fishing line running back and forth. For some reason that does not seem to stop him from showing up.
Last night, I got up to go to the bathroom at 12:30AM, and I saw him take off from the pond, and flew away!
Has anyone else ever seen a heron this time of night?
I wonder if it is the same one who shows up all of the time. If so...............this is the culprit.

Lee, Our heron at work sits atop a tree all night.
I often see him as I am leaving, and in the morning when I am parking my car,
he is still there, but all fluffed up trying to stay warm.
I also get the giggles watching him stalk around on the ice,
like he is actually gonna spear something through the ice. ::)
Peace to all  ... Joyce

John, there is a lot of detail on that picture. Good close up shot!
When we got that picture, last spring, my son actually shot at him with a paint ball gun. Funny thing was, that there were guys working on the other side of the church, and we were laughing, and wondering if they saw any of the paintballs going by!
Didn't stop the heron, though, he keeps coming back.
I guess it is the same heron.

Lee, Better tell your son to put away that paintball gun! He could be fined bigtime if he killed the heron (and from what I've heard about paintball guns, he probably could kill it)
Maybe an air gun or some noisy thing to scare it instead?
My neighbor runs thick fishing line all over his pond which doesn't look bad at all, but keeps the herons out of the pond.

Hi all, I had thought of that after he got the gun out....but the heron was sitting on top of the church as in that picture, and there was no way the paint balls were going to get near that bird, so I did not say anthing to Drew. Just thought it was pretty funny to watch, especially with the guys working on the other side of the church.

Hey Elly.........how are you? I enjoy the jokes, stll know you are around that way, but have been wondering how you have been doing!

Nice Heron! I had a visitor a fews years back but this did the trick. When you're able to run a hose to your pond, you have to buy what is called a "scare crow". It is actived by movement causing a three second spray to be released from its nozzle. It works on Herons, pets (my dog thinks its a game) and off course people! It can be a little percarious to set the correct nozzle flow but once you have it, it works great

Pam, that sounds like a great idea!
Maybe I could get the stray cats to go somewhere else also!
