writing my memoirs
« on: October 25, 2012, 11:26:22 PM »
it started out as a family history. Just so the kids would know where they came from. Now I am on fire and can't stop.  Here is an episode....
The photo is Gordonel, one of the diving horses that I helped take care of. I used a shovel mostly! ;D
_____________________________________________________________________________________
When I worked at the zoo on Steel Pier in Atlantic City, the job was a gateway to the water circus. I became pals with the stage managers son, Mookie. We both loved to dive, but we were 16 yr old kids. Raw amateurs compared to " the Diving Collegians." Many of them never went to college, all of them were accomplished divers.

They would open the show wearing bathing attire made from the gaily colored striped canvas they used on beach chairs. The MC, Frank Gravett would announce in stentorian tones " here come the diving collegians!" To your left, coming through the arches ,Flo Danly and Donnie Wescott. Two high on an "Aquaplane."
I think I had his entire speil memorized.
They would come out in garish clown-like costumes and dive, jump and somersault off the pier.
We were invited to be part of this opening act! What an adventure for a 16 year old!
Some of the suits had a trap door in the rear, one could climb out of the water and release a load of sea water on the diver below. The crowd loved it.
We would quietly disappear when it was time for the exhibitions of diving.

One of the divers was Charlie Diehl. He was a giant of a man, as well as graceful. He was billed as " the heavyweight diving champion of the world! He was nice to us and spent many hours showing us diving techniques.

I recently found a poster of him on E-Bay. It was the cover of a Wheaties box. I learned that Charlie became a Los Angeles Ram as well.
He also starred in Billy Rose's famed "
Aquapades!" As did
Billy's wife ,Olympic champion
Eleanor's Holm.   Will anyone who reads this know what I am talking about? The diving horses era came to an end with the advent of animal rights groups. As far as I could tell the horses seemed to like the diving. They never balked, never! Hesitate a few times sure. So did we. Mookie and I would jump from a spot just below the place the horses jumped from.
We were not brave enough for the 40 foot leap.

That was an interesting glimpse of your youth, Jerry! I had never before heard of diving horses.

Good for you. I would guess that the story of your life would be interesting to anyone, especially to your kids and theirs because times were so different back then.

I started asking my dad questions and recording his answers but he went downhill too fast and we only did it one day. Now I'm real sorry I didn't start sooner. Most of his siblings are gone and my mom's been gone 8 years so there's not many around of whom to ask my questions.

Very interesting Jerry.  You do need to write a book.

I thought about you a lot while watching the destruction on the east coast.  I have never been to the Jersey shore.  You have so many good memories.

How are you doing since your surgery?

The movie was " wild hearts can't be broken" Bruce Boxleitner was the lead.
As you may know I have been a Californian sine I was 20.
My healing has slowed way down. Most disheartening.   I was told a 10 week recovery. Now I am told it can be six months!!!  My garden is going to hell.  No bending, no lifting.  I walk fine, but if it is a distance ,I am in trouble.  I fear it will stay this way. >:(-

Thanks for asking Karen

                                                      Lorraine Hotel
I was a busboy and elevator operator at the
Lorraine hotel. I was given a room that overlooked the dressing rooms at the " Globe burlesque theatre.”
I quickly became popular with other teens. Ed Axel visited me and was as thrilled as I was at the view. The "girls" were not modest and probably had a few laughs at the teen boys with raging hormones and glassy eyes ogling them.

Harold visited me at the Lorraine; he was about 27 at the time. He had great concerns for me.
He asked me if I had been with a woman. I said no, but I could have. “Explain he said.”

"We'll, I said " there is this waitress in a hotel a few doors away, she is in her 20s. She invited me to her room to see her new red pumps! I didn't' have any idea what red pumps were. We sat on her bed and she opened a box with red shoes in it!  I Feigned interest. Heck, I am sure I had no idea what to say. She sat closer and took her thumb and index finger and pulled her lower lip out as far as she could, and asked, " is this trench mouth?" I had no idea what trench mouth was. I knew it couldn't be good.
As a 17 year old I was very taken aback. I got out of there as quickly as I could. I am sure I tried to act very cool. I was not!
As you can guess Harold laughed so hard that tears ran down his cheeks.

*Trench mouth was a disease picked up by soldiers in the trenches in world war one.
