Another Question On Pump Size
« on: April 04, 2010, 07:24:08 PM »
I'm hoping someone can help me determine the appropriate size of pump for my pond.  I've read the various posts on this site, so forgive me if I ask another question on pump size.

I thought I knew what pump to buy, but as I dug deeper into my research, I began to read things about head height, distance from skimmer to waterfall, resistance from friction and flow curve charts.  I'm getting confused and now I don't know what pump to buy.  I thought I would ask the experts for some help.

I've started to gather some materials for my pond.  The pond is about 16x14.  I'm trying to get around 3 feet deep, which gives me a volume of approximately 5000 gallons.  I've purchased the Atlantic PS4900 Skimmer along with the BF2600 Waterfall weir.  Both items are rated for ponds between 3000-5000 gallons.  My plan is to locate the skimmer on one side of the pond and pump the water back to the water fall.  I've measured the distance and it will be about 25-30 feet from the skimmer back to the waterfall.  I'd like the top of the waterfall to be about 2 to 3 feet off of the surface of the water.

One of the pumps I've been looking at is the Pondmaster Hydrive 4800.  Will that be a large enough pump for my waterfall or do I need to look for a larger pump?  Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

JLEL,

I put your info in my pool calculator with the following results:

Average length   16 feet
Average width    14 feet
Average depth       3 feet
Gallons               5,027

Results:
Required pump flow  2514 GPH
Required biofilter volume  between 210 and 419 gallons
Mechanical filter area  4.19 square feet.    If a round filter s used this would have a diameter od 28 inches.
A vortex or settling tank should be  at least 50 gallons.
Plumbing fed by your pump should be at least 2.49 I.D.
any gravity fed plumbing should hav an I.D. of at least 3.67 inches.

Going to my head loss calculator:
Entering 2.5 I.D. Pipe size.
Entering 3 feet for static head,
Estimating 4 long cuve elbows.
Estimating 34 feet of total pipe length.

Results:
Equivalent feet from elbows = 30
Total feet including elbows = 64
Head from pipe resistance = 1.3 feet
Total system head = 4.3 feet.

Therefore, you will need a pump that will produce a flow of 2,514 GPH at a head resistance of 4.3 feet.

Looking at the pump you mentioned, extrapolating the published flow/head data, it appears that at 4.3 feet of head, the pump can flow up to 4,100 GPH, which is substantially more than needed.  In fact, you might consider placing a valve in the pump output to restrict the flow to reduce turbulence in your biofilter.  Also, reducing the flow slightly can often reduce the power usage of the pump.

You can see my calculators at http://www.gardenendeavors.com/rack/pool10.html

Make sure you have a spare pump too, just in case the first one fails.

Thanks for the information, especially all of the details from Johns.  I feel better now about making the pump purchase.  I've been researching ponds for more than a year now and I can't believe how involved it is, especially if you're a first-timer and wanting to do it yourself.
