Need help with 'puter settings
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:28:10 AM »
DD#1 changed some setting so now everytime the computer does anything a window pops up and asks you if you want to allow ActiveX to run.  I'm not sure what she did, but besides that, her screen is trying to die.  I need to get her puter running well enough to pull her files off onto mine - even without the screen.  I can do it thru the wireless network, but need to clear up the active x thingy.

Anyone have any ideas what she did?

Teresa,

Unless there is some reason you do not want ActiveX to run (not likely) you can reset it here:

http://www.pcpitstop.com/testax.asp

I'm assuming she is using Internet Explorer and if so, there is no reason to restrict ActiveX from running.

Hope this helps,

Keep Smilin'

Thanks John!  I finally got all the most important data copied onto my computer so hers can be repaired (it will likely be replaced).  Dunno what she did to get that pop up going, but man was it a pain in the butt!!  And now, DD#2 has something popping up on her puter about cineplayer.  Think I'm taking computer priviledges away for a while . . . they aren't supposed to change settings or download crap onto their puters but they are doing both.

Teresa,
You do know that you can make it impossible for them to do that, don't you?

The upside is that they cannot add programs or change settings.

The downside is that if it's something you are ok with them changing, you have to do it for them.

If this is news to you, look into "User Accounts" on the control panel or I'll be happy to assist you. If you already know all this, just forget I said anything at all except:

No, I didn't know that.  I'll look at that tomorrow . . . . just too exhausted and unhappy tonight to think hard.  I will also be asking you how to fix the desktop look tomorrow . . . . I can't seem to get the words under the icons set up so I can read them, tho they don't bother the munchkin . . .

Thanks so much for the help . . . still gotta take the broken laptop to a dealer to be fixed.
