Understanding PH

I'm trying to get a handle on PH and what I should expect here.  Basically this whole peninsula is one big limestone rock.  We have well water at the house for the pool, pond and plants.  Since it is coming out of this chunk of limestone, am I right to assume the PH will be fairly high and well buffered?  If so, it sounds like perfect water for the pond. 

Now, it also rains a lot in the summer.  Again, I'm guessing, but rain should have a more neutral PH correct?  There aren't any big manufacturing areas around here to add acid to it.  So, if my pond overflows with a lot of rain will it dramatically effect the fish? 

I know, I need to buy a test kit and find out but I'm spending a lot of time now thinking about fish and plants and trying to get a head start.   I want to put tropical fish that look good from above in the ponds.  Koi and fancy goldfish are the major 'look good from above' fish but I would like to have chiclids or small schooling fish or other aquarium type fish.  The water temp will probably stay in the 75 to 85 F range year round.  It could get higher in the shallow parts of the pond but the temp is buffered to some degree by the limestone rock it is in. 

I've been looking at all sorts of tropical fish and trying to figure out their requirements and how aggessive they are.  It may be that I stay with small fish in schools, less danger from predators that way and they could be very pretty darting under the lilies. 

I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions.  Do I have the basic idea of PH correct?

The water coming out of the Edwards aquifer (limestone) in Texas has a ph of 12 or so - way too high for koi.
You HAVE to test it. Bench racing won't work on this one.

Wow!  I just spent a couple hours reading there and that is quite a lot of information.   I do now have a better understanding of the terms I see a lot and never really understood.  Probably still don't in depth but they make more sense now.  I will test the water once I am at the house.  Where I'm at now is the daydreaming and trying to decide what I would like and whether it would be feasible to have them.  I was very happy to see the step by step way to leech a concrete pond as that is what I will have X 2.  Also the jump start the bacteria filter was interesting, without fish I might be able to do that but I'd be afraid of mosquitoes breeding.   

I was surprised to see that koi prefer 78F water, I think of them as cold water fish I guess because in most areas they are in cold water.  It's tempting to have a few koi and leave it at that but I'm still not sure whether my dogs will keep the coatamundi's and raccoons out of the yard.  I think the indoor pond would be too narrow for a koi, it would be more like a race track for them.  They really are great to look at from above though.   It's deep enough I think, about 3', but it is narrow, 4',  and very long, maybe 20'.  Would it be fish cruelty to have 2 koi in there?

In the outside pond, I think once I've acid washed the concrete I will put in a dozen of the little red platys that are free in everyone's pond here. They can take care of the mosquito larvae while the filter cycles and I decide what I want. 

Don't tell Roark but the outside pond will be mainly for lilies and plants with fish for interest and mosquito control.  Inside, the plants will be in the bog filter/waterfall and not much in the pond.  Not a lot of sun for one thing, diffused only.

Jonna, my pond is 3' x 18' and 30" deep.  The koi (and there are a LOT of them) do just fine.  Of course, if my yard were bigger, I would have a larger pond, not a bowling alley.  But that's what fits here, so that's what the fish have.  No one's ever complained.        I do keep it covered with a screen, though, as some fish have jumped out, esp. at spawning time.

I have to deal with PH in our pool. I have only EVER had to adjust the PH up with soda because of our acidic rain I guess. If I test the water coming out of the faucet, it tests perfect. But when I tested the pond, the PH was too high. But I have never adjusted the pond PH. Now, what about the fish in the natural lakes etc, wouldn't that water be from a limestone base too and the PH high?

Koi prefer 78 degree water???? Don't let mine know that. Poor things spend maybe 5 months a year under the ice.
