Field Fire!!

I was at my desk at home when I detect the faint smell of smoke.  The windows are open here, it's a nice, non-humid day---DH was across the road in the wheat stubble field getting ready to bale up some straw.  He was mowing stubble and hit a rock, making a spark---WHOOSH!!!!  He came flying out of the field, back up the road to get the 4-wheeler with a small water tank and sprayer to put out the fire.  I ran to put on my boots, grabbing a rake and took off towards the field with my fire pager and cell phone. 

Too late, flames 12 foot high, crackling flames, ash flying everywhere.  A FIRE AND NO GEAR TO FIGHT IT WITH--EVERY FIREFIGHTER'S NIGHTMARE--AND IT'S MY OWN FIELD!

Had to call 911 and they dispatched the small volunteer FD who didn't show up for 10 minutes (good thing it wasn't my house, huh?    )  when the dispatch center dispatched the station that I run with 6 miles away in the largest town.  My unit just happened to be on duty today...  

Here they come, seeing me in my capri pants, muck boots, with my cell phone and a rake....waiting patiently for someone to put out the fire in my field...      They got a good laugh, put out our fire, nothing damaged except a blackened field.  I gave them some sweet corn to take back to the station for supper.

Thanks everyone!  They called me at the station and said one of the firefighters lost his cell phone in the field.  DH and I went out after supper and found it right where they were standing when loading the hose back onto the brush truck!!     I ran it in to him since he was out on a medic run.  He was very relieved and even tho' it had been run over a few times, it still worked!  He said he was due for an upgrade, but he needed the card in the back cuz he couldn't remember all the numbers in his phone! 

No one was hurt, and it was a beautiful day for a field fire, even though it was my own!

A spark from hitting a rock caused all that?!?!  Man, that's something to be aware of!  I thought it was just Indians back in the Wild West who started fires that way....

That would have scared me to death, probably exciting for you. 

We have some fields that are planted for wildlife, prairie grasses, wildflowers, etc.  Every five years or so we have a controlled burn.  The volunteer fire department comes out with their four wheelers, backpacks, etc.  Even with all the training we have had some scary times, like when their pickup truck wouldn't start and it was in the path of the fire.  Hubby had to run to the barn and get the tractor to pull it out while the guys stood around hosing it down.  I took some really good pictures and they enlarged and framed them to hang in the fire house.  I am always amazed at how fast the fire travels across a field, no way could you outrun it.  The neatest one is when they start a fire on each side of the field to burn towards the center, when they meet, they make a hugh swirl and roar.

it's dry here most of the time.  A spark from a cycle can do it.
I took my Boy Scout test in PA.  I had a hard time starting a fire  because of the humidity.

God I used to hate brush fires. It's very wooded around here, piney woods with lots of dead pine needles on the ground. A piece of glass can concentrate the suns rays and start a fire in the middle of nowhere. Also, you have no landmarks when you communicate. Once I called the chief of a nearby station who was helping us fight a fire like this,the conversation went..

" 51, whats your 20?"

"Briar patch."

THanks everyone--yes it was some excitement to break up a regular day!  The guys at the station told me they were talking "we need a good fire today, maybe a mutual aid fire" --the kind where they don't have to set up command, they just come in with their equipment and shoot water.  (Ya know, a good kind of fire, in the country, no dwellings, injuries, etc)  It broke up their day and they missed having to clean equipment so they could leave it for the next day's unit to do!   

And yes Jim...I took some ribbing about my "get-up".  I certainly didn't want to go to the field with flip-flops on to fight a fire.  It was too far along for me to do anything anyway, so I just gave them good moral support....

and how many firefighters can you get on a little tiny roof before they all fall and bust themselves up?  And all with their SCBA's on too      Wonder why the person taking the pic didn't holler at them....probably was the safety officer!
