Biofilter media

What is your choice of biofilter media?  I'm looking at using Springflo but it's expensive. I don't like the bioballs I've been using. They are bulky and difficult to handle. I want something that doesn't channel or clog. I don't have a huge amount of water to filter. Both ponds are around 1000 gallons each. I have media in the waterfall and behind the mechanical filter pad in the skimmer. Not optimal I know but until I can upgrade totally I have to make do. My fish load is very low and I have lots of plant material. Suggestions?

Hi Kay,

Most Koi pond hobbyist use either K1 or Bioflo9 due to ease of maintenance. I'm using both K1/Bioflow9 as moving bed and japanese matting(will convert later). Bioballs are good for trickle filter, IMHO Some ppl use scruber pads, onion bags, bird netting, etc. At the end of the day it all comes down to how much time do you want to spend cleaning your filter instead of enjoying your fish

I will be using plastic bottle caps in my moving bed filter for now.  I will probably augment with Bioflow9 down the road when I find out how good or bad the caps are working. 

Also, my pond is a goldfish watergarden pond so the filtration requirement is not as stringent as in a true koi pond.  Bottle caps may work for you since your fish load is so low.

Another good media is BH(bacteria house) from momotaro. They're expenssive but almost maintenance free

Kay, I should add that the bottle cap fluid bed is going to be after a settlement chamber with a static prefilter.  That should catch most of the debris and leave the bottle caps to just colonize bacteria.

Kay I have been looking and comparing prices of bio for my new pond....I am leaning towards the springflo....it says you get 2-3 cu.ft. and I have found it as low as $50.....so that breaks down to a fair price to me....I tried the scrubby pads but, by the time you buy all of them...they add up too....I use bird netting on the bottom of my bio tank now and hate it...It is messy messy to clean.....of course I'm really going to focus on good mechanical filtration on the new one so I shouldn't have as much up keep when it comes to the bio...my mechanical and bio are DIY and 2 separate tanks...so my thinking is if I catch all the crud in my mechanical tank then by the time it reaches the bio tank it should be clean water....

AZponds has Springflo for $44.95 with free shipping. I think for my baby Skippy I'm going to try that. I'll test it this year and see how it does. Good plan there Lawanna

I've heard people use plastic strapping material also.  I'm considering that or pvc shavings (ribbons) for my static prefilter.

You need a good surface area so the beneficial bacteria can colonize properly in your biofilter

As for prefilter, you can use K1, bioflo9, pvc shavings, brushes, matting, bird netting, etc. It will come down to how dirty do you want to be when you clean your SC

I am in the process of building a new biofilter and I got my biofilter media from watergarden.com. It is "polyflo" and is black, is fairly stiff and has lots of surfaces for bacteria growth.  I got a roll 1 1/2" thich x 28"wide x 12' long.  The price was $65.00 + shipping.  I cut a solid piece to fit snug to the sides of the filter tub (a 100 gal Rubbermaid) on top of the grate above my perforated inflow pipe.  I also cut a solid piece to fit snug in the filter about 4" below the water level I want to maintain at the top of the filter.  I will also place a black painted plastic grate on the top piece of filter media.  The remainder of the media, I cut into approx. 2"x2"x1 1/2" blocks and filled three large (approx. 20"x30") black polyester mesh bags that I made.  I will place these bags of media between the bottom solid piece and the top solid piece.  The outflow above the top grate will go out several bulkhead connectors to a waterfall.

I did lots of research on filter media before I decided on this one.  I am pleased with the quality and I think it will hold up for a long time and it will be easy to clean.  I think the price is reasonable.

I have used lava rock before and they worked great.  Along with the brushes in the filter.  Really cheap from walmart too.
