Another Failure... I dub her, Plain Jane.
« on: April 18, 2007, 10:27:52 AM »
Well I have created yet another failure, at least in my own opinion of what a good contender would be.

This lily has plain green pads, and only 11 petals. I was wondering why the bud was pinched like a double... There just weren't many petals at all so it appeared that way.

The only thing I do like about this lily is the faint blush of pink. I had first thought it was going to be a yellow or a white. I guess pale blush pink is close to white but not close enough for me. I was expecting a highly double bloom, over 50 petals.

This one will be given away to someone who will promise not to propagate it or give it away to anyone else.

Cheers,
Sean

I just tossed her outside and took a photo of the bloom in natural light. You can see the actual color better. It is almost white, but not quite.

Sorry Sean, I know how you were hoping for a double.

Now, for a piece of advice. When using the word "failure" in a sentence, do not use  the word "another" as well.

Cheers,

Mike

Yes, I have to agree with Mike.  Besides, how can it be a failure when you have "created" something?  o(:-)

Attached are two photo's of the mother to Plain Jane, You can see why I am disappointed with this lily. 11 petals just doesn't cut it when you come from great genes like this.

Here is a sibling to Plain Jane that I grew out last year that was worthy of keeping due to better characteristics. The differences are striking.

I love the color of Plain Jane . . . and I like the shape of the flower too . . . . not fancy, but pretty none-the-less.

Hey Sean,

What are the chances you mixed tags or had a rogue tuber sprout, 'cause when I look at PJ I see the flower of white colorata.

I'm sure in the lily world you know what you're talking about...however, I think that plain jane is elegant and understated.  A true beauty without the "flash"   :)

As I slap myself in the forehead with Craig's Comment

You are right Craig, It must be White colorata. I did use soil from the pond that came out of old Dixie cups that didn't have anything in them. As prolific as white colorata is, it must be. It has divided into 3 crowns as well so I cant think of anything else it could be.

Thanks Craig, but now I feel like a real idiot {:-P;;

purple colorata... I haven't seen that one. You got any pix. Is it as prolific as the blue species form?

The good news then, is that this lily was not a failure. You now still have reason to play with those parents. I want a double white. (By May would be good)

Cheers,

Mike

I have a half sister...to your hybrid from the 51 petalled lily.   It is getting ready to bloom again and I will take a picture of it.   It is pretty...has 32 petals but nothing extraordinary.    The pads are very flecked.   I crossed it with a lily I got from Garet that has white inside the sepals and at the base of the petals.   I call it "Maude"...named it after one of my possums.   "Maude" (the lily) doesn't have any white tho.   I think I will cross it back to the 51 lily again.

Here is my latest 'Old Man Lily'...sad thing is it is the one I was hoping would actually be my pink 'Midnight' since the bud was so pinched!

I thik their gorgeous, and I agree with MikeW and Kittyzee how can it be a failure when you created it.  that is amazing that you created it I would love to do that.  Heck I get excited when my seeds grow.
