pick a faux brick pattern
« on: April 23, 2007, 10:23:45 AM »
If you were having to do a bunch of concrete work and were putting in a new patio with an eye to the future to incorporate a Japanese Garden type of yard, which one of these patterns would you say fits that ultimate goal?

www.artcrete.com

It must also work on its own in the event that the Japanese Garden never happens.

I hadn't planned on pouring a patio this year, but the cost to do it now along with all the critical concrete that must be done is far less than a repeat visit in a year or two so I decided to bite the bullet and take care of it all in one shot and have a patio to use by this summer.

Thanks.

Bart

Well, you'll have to pick something that will go with the house, but looking at the choices, I'd pick ashlar slate.

Good luck,

Steve

After looking at the selections and seeing the finished applications, I'd pick ashlar slate too...just love the dark color.  Very relaxing to me.

I like the flagstone, but ashlar slate would also be a very good choice.

If I were you, I'd flip through a book of Japanese gardens and see whether the orderly geometry of the slate or the randomness of the flagstone is more authentic to the style. I don't know much about Japanese garden style myself.

I see Sean is the odd man out on this one.  Why that pattern Sean?

I can't say that I have ever seen any Japanese Garden complete with a concrete patio so I don't know if I can truely make that connection, but the closer I can get to the proper flow the better.

I'm not hung-up on any of them right now.  I like many of them and find myself spoiled for choices.

I am embarrassed to admit this, but I can't figure out where the selections are on the website.

Click on Stencils on the upper left margin.

I like the Ashtar slate too or the flagstone. I'm not certain any of them look very Japanese but I like stone better than brick.

Japanese gardens are very symbolic and minimalist so textures often represent things that are not really there. The fish scale pattern would represent waves in the ocean or even a step further, actual scales of a fish in a pond.

I like Ashlar Slate and Fish Scales.  What color is your house?  That would influence my decision, too.

light grey siding and white stucco.  More white, overall, than grey.  In the future I'd probably have the siding removed and stucco the whole thing, but who knows what colour yet since that is years from now.

For now, I think I'd need to stick to the grey colours for the patio.

The fish scales look reminds of of old style Paris or something and the Ashtar is nice, but different size groute lines which may be distracting.

Still considering.  I have about 2 weeks before I will need to decide.
