Green panda bamboo?
« on: April 29, 2007, 09:30:05 AM »
Anyone know anything more about this plant?
http://www.greenwoodnursery.com/page.cfm/34334

It's called green panda bamboo, I saw one at the local nursery yesterday, but they didn't know much about it.

What is the care of it? Do you cut it back like a grass, or is it something you leave- like a shrub? is it really evergreen? My nursery is selling it as hardy here in zone 5.

What little I know about bamboo is that it can be invasive and try to take over the world. I read that it should be planted inside of something so it can't travel. But this might not apply to your type.

Jerry has bamboo but I don't know what kind.

Holy cow!!! I just read the plant description from the link you gave. Did you see the price??? Also down lower on the page, it said it was "non running". I assume that it means that it does NOT spread like I was talking about.

In the description it says non-running, so it is a clumping bamboo...not invasive. 8)
In your zone, you would probably needs to cut back the dead growth every spring...
wait for new growth before trimming...so you don't cut anything that is alive.
Depending on the severity of your winters, you may or may not get a lot of winter kill.

Make sure you know what the local nursery offers as a plant guarantee.
Cuz the website says zones 6 and up for hardiness. :o

Esther- The nursery here has it for $39 and it's a big pot of it. Still a little pricey, but if it blocks the highway may be worth it instead of trees.

Joyce- they have a one year garantee over here. they are pretty good about it, I have taken one or two perrenials back that didnt' make it.
I may be taking my Crimson Queen Jap Maple back this week, still no leaves coming out. I have some tiny buds, but then we got the cold temps and they dont' seem to be growing. the other maple right next to it has nice leaves coming in. that ne was not supposed to be hardy here! Go figure!

Picked up a tree at the nursery yesterday and all the panda bamboo was gone already except one sad looking plant! Maybe someone knows something about this plant I don't! I was shocked that it moved out so quickly I was jus there on Saturday!
