I did seven years of Latin, and today cannot tell plants apart. I know I learn from masters like you, Joyce, LeeAnne, and Teresa.

How come I can translate three books of Caesars Gallic Wars, accurately I might add, but I still stuggle with plant names?

Cheers,

Mike

Some interesting plants there Joyce. I can't wait to see the photos. No new plants for me this year. We have our property up for sale and this will be our last summer here. I'll be busy potting up my favourites for the next garden. It's really hard but I'm staying well away from all nurseries this spring.

I took three years of Latin in High school and don't remember any of it! Still have trouble with plant names too.

One of the big problems with botanical Latin is that they change the names all the time because they reclassify the plant but it takes years for the new name to trickle down.

This year marks the 300 year anniversary of Linneas (can't remember if it is his birth or death) who invented the system of classification we use for plants and animals.

I went to a plant sale on Sunday, bought:

Clematis 'Royalty'
Clematis recta purpurea
variegated poet's Jasmine
several hardy fuchsias
two ferns, a lady fern and 'Brilliant' autumn fern

I have a huge pile of unplanted pots. Really need to stop buying and get them into the ground.

Today we "liberated" some plants from a house my father in law is painting. it is being sold because the lady who lived there had died, and there was sedum overgrown from the front yard beds all through her yard!!

We snagged a a clump or 2 of that, then went out back and found some Gladiolas growing half-wild, so we snagged 2 of them as well...:)

then we went to see our favorite little old Thai lady, who sells plants out of her front yard on the weekends.  we picked up a lilac, a pot of Bachelor Button, some more Hen & Chicks, and a pot of Bamboo that i hope will become a privacy hedge on one side of our yard in a few years  ;D
