My new "potting" shed
« on: May 26, 2007, 12:54:24 PM »
Actually its a storage shed for all my pond stuff, but I just couldn't resist lol

I collect outhouses and this is my newest addition.  Its in great shape and is a WPA (Works Progress Administration) outhouse.  These were built by government workers during the Great Depression.  The property owner paid only for the materials.  The floor and toilet is one solid piece of concrete and there was also a concrete pit under it.  We didn't bother moving and digging a hole for the pit.  We have two of the WPA outhouses and they are both in great shape considering they were built in the 1930's.

We tried to situate it where it wasn't too noticeable, but handy to get to.  Its behind the house and I already have a path worn to it. ;D

I know its an odd thing to collect, but I think in some strange way they add a little charm to a wooded area.  Thank goodness we no longer need to use them. :)

Thanks Joann!  I posted the pond pic to show where we put the outhouse, but it doesn't show up very well.  Its in the far right side of the picture.

I remember using an outhouse as a child.   ;D ;D ;D  The good ole days...LOL
DH was talking about an outhouse latch just yesterday.

Here in Redneckville nothing a person collects surprises us.  COOL

Another "IN Karen" pix added to my forum friends pix on my computer! ;)

Karen your pond ALWAYS looks so nice and wow all of those lilies blooming!   The outhouse is perfect and a great potting shed!

Okay if I may ask, what is on the white post by the pond and what's the red circle to the upper right of the water fall?

Karen, very cool addition and pond. What are the approximate dimensions of your pond? How far back does your waterfall go? Do you have any photos of the construction? Thanks in advance!!

Aww, what a nifty idea.  Love your pond, and I do see it in the wooded area by the pond, talk about camouflage.

Kim

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.

Thanks everyone, for the compliments.

Bonnie, the plant blooming beside the lightpost is a lily.  I got it at WalMart two years ago for fifty cents.  No tag.  Wish I could find more deals like that!!
The red circle is a windspinner that my sons got me for Christmas a couple years ago.  I don't know what you call them, but they are heavy metal and when the sun shines on it, it looks like it is electrically lit.  I took a picture but its cloudy out so it didn't photograph very well.

Jessica, I have some construction pics but not many and they are not loaded on the computer.  The pond is approximately 35 foot and the stream another 35 to the top waterfall (biofilter).  It is approximately 7500 gallon.

That outhouse idea is really clever.  If you collect them, you must have several ... which means you must live in the country.  ??

I just love old or vintage things (even potties!), and I love that they are being preserved.  Here in Houston, beautiful old houses and buildings are torn down at an alarming rate.

I must say I've never known anyone that collected outhouses. There's one by my dh's aunts camp that they still actually do use. I know I did a few times while there fishing. It's in FANTASTIC shape and they even named it. It's called Sparky. And if I remember rightly it has a moon shape cut at the top of the door.

I must say your pond is GORGEOUS!!! LOVE the natural look to it. Just BEAUTIFUL!!!
