Semi-double hellebore more photos added

This semi-double hellebore is a chance seedling from named doubles from Germany. I love the colour tones in this flower. I will post a few more photos tomorrow. It was very windy today and hard to get good pictures.

That is a beautiful photo of the delicate frills on the flower.  I first learned about hellebores from AP and love their distinct look.  I have 2 myself but keep them in the shade of big trees where they are shades and cooler.  If they can repopulate by seeding I will be a very happy gardener!

Hi Annette,

Hellebores reseed nicely. You will start to see little seedlings around the plant in the early spring. They take 2-3 years to bloom. I hope to self pollinate this one to get a purer colour and possibly get a double. I may also try crossing it with some of the singles.
Here they bloom best in full sun, but cooler shade is best for your climate. I love them because they do well in our rainy cool spring weather.

That is very pretty.  @O@

I have one double and the others are single. I like to pluck them and float them in a birdbath so I can see them easier since they face down.

I haven't found any seedlings.... :(

Thanks LeeAnne,

I love to pick mine too and float them in bowls on the kitchen window. A few of ours are a bit more upward facing too so that helps.
What does your double look like? I would love to see a photo. It's too bad you don't have any seedings yet. They are very small the first year and hard to see so it's very easy to accidentally weed them out. I am very careful when weeding around my plants. You could always pick the seeds just before the pod splits open and sow the seeds in pots. Just make sure they don't dry out at all or they will not germinate. Your double could give you some very interesting seedlings with the possibility of some more doubles and a very good chance of semi-doubles.
Post some photos of your hellebores. I would love to see them.

Thanks Joyce,

I would love to see yours as well. Your new home sounds very nice. I am sure your hellebores will like it there. Ours will be coming with us too when we move.

Here are a few more.

This one is a seedling from a white spotted X a pink spotted. I like the golden nectaries in this one but not the petal shapes so much. I prefer the larger rounded or pointed petals, but I will self this one any way and see what happens.

This one is a very dark almost black plum colour. It also has dark foliage and is very pretty but not very vigourous.

Here's a pretty butter yellow with light red spotting. The blooms are large on this plant and I hope to work with it to improve the markings and maybe a darker shade of yellow.

This is a very pretty picottee. The blooms on this one are upward facing, large in size and is very vigorous. Although it reseeds well I haven't see any blooms yet from it's seedlings.

This is another German seedlings, also very pretty medium sized star shaped petals on a very vigorous and prolific bloomer. The blooms are a very nice clear pink with very little green showing.

Another seedling from the white spotted and the pink spotted. The colour is a bit muddy on this one but I like the shape and markings here.

Another German seedling. This one has very large flowers that are a lovely shade of red. I want to self this one too in order to try to get a clearer red. So far no blooms on it's seedlings either.

This is another German seedling. This plant is a very weak growing plant with very dark foliage, very small flowers that are a very dk slate blue. I don't think it will last much longer but I hope to gather a few seeds from it.

A new seedling from my white spotted X pink spotted. This one has fairly clear colour, nice makings and pretty green nectaries, so hope to keep it as well.

A white seedlling from the spotted white X pink white. It's the best white so far for me.

I still have a few more to photograph in the next few days if the weather ever improves. It has been very stormy and cold here lately.

Maryvonne, absolutely beautiful blooms you have there.  I wish I had more space and cooler weather to have such a wide variety of hellebores.  You take great photos too!

I just bought a pink picotee earlier this week. Haven't planted it yet.

I'll see if I have photos from last year. It has rained so much this year, I haven't taken any.

For anyone wanting to see some beautiful hellebores, Ashwood nurseries in the UK probably have the best collection. Here's a link to their photos.
