Wildfires, its our turn
« on: June 22, 2007, 08:31:54 AM »
The wildfires are starting for us this week. There is one about 80 miles from here that is 2,000 acres.
Another started last night about 45 miles from here in a nearby small ranching/ski town community. I used to live there myself a number of years ago. Three homes were lost to this fire last night. Rigs and crews from every department in our county and one neighboring county came to assist. My dept. couldn't send any rigs and people since we were all working a special event last night. We felt bad because we couldn't go help. All we could do was sit and listen to it all unfold on the radios.
This particular community is remote. They have a fire dept. but not nearly enough resources to begin to battle a fire like this. Its believed the fire was started by kids playing with fireworks. When I lived up there, that is one thing you learned that you never, ever do. Never strike a match to anything and never shoot off fireworks.
NEVER!

I hate fires.  They are soooo destructful.  Hopefully the wind isn't blowing hard nor is it blowing your way.

Oh shoot, I hope they get control over it soon, and stay safe doing so.  Yes, with every thing so dry a simple ember or spark could set anything on fire.

I'm sorry the wildfires are starting there too, Shanna.   :(   For some reason I thought Colorado had been having a lot of rain lately like we have.   Maybe it was just Eastern Colorado I've been seeing on the weather channel?

No, we haven't been getting any rain at all. We have dry storms come through with lightning and wind. :(

They have the fire contained today. No more buildings were lost.  :)
