Show me DIY Mechanical Prefilters
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:44:04 AM »
Hey y'all, long time no post!

My pond is coming into spring time and looking pretty bad right now, but I am sure that in a month or so it will be great again.

In the meantime I need to replace my mechanical prefilter.  it was a simple DIY affair when I built the pond in 2006, and the media was the blue aquarium batting from Petsmart. I replaced the batting last year and find that the new batting is just falling apart; it doesn't last as long as the stuff I bought in 2006.

So please link me to your favorite DIY mechanical prefilters for a SMALL pond! If you have pics of your own please throw them up here!
My pond is a turtle pond!

2006: ~135 gallons of water in a 150 gallon stock tank.
2012: ~250 gallons in a 330 gallon stock tank
2013: ~40 gallon in-ground wading pool for my box turtle

One RES, and a passel of gambusias.

{:-P;;  LOL   :D  All I have are redneck prefilters.

I use the blue evaporative cooler pads from WalMart.  I cut them to fit.  Right now in my 8' tank I have a plastic laundry basket with pads zipped to the "holes" and my submersible pump is wrapped in another pad and dropped in the basket....amazing thing is that right now it is doing a bonus job as a skimmer.

In another tank, I have a pad cut in a circle stitched inside 1/2 of a minnow trap.  I use dental floss to "sew".  The tubing and cord go up the center hole.

Pretty...NO...but my water is very clear.

Well mine was pretty redneck too, if yours are: a small plastic storage box drilled full of holes, with the pump inside wrapped in the blue and white batting media.
