They found it down by the Guatemala border in Chiapas, Mexico.  On the spanish news channel they said it was a type they thought was extinct, the last one they found was in 1941.

that would be too cool to find. but it really saddens me to see it plucked like that. it would have been much better to have left it and protected it for as long as it might survive.  :'(

Mushrooms generally only live a few days.   ;)  Although who knows with that one!  I forgot to ask my mushroom-obsessed husband if he heard of this story.

Someone else probably knows more but I think the mushroom we see is only the bloom and the spores live underground.  I read a while back that the largest mushroom in the world is underneath Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota - something like that.
