Now where the H*** did this little guy come from???
« on: July 25, 2007, 09:38:08 AM »
Caught this fellow about 4 feet from my largest koi pond.  He was all wet, so he must have been in already.  I know what he is.  Do any of you know?  Guess where he is NOT going...

Looks like a snapping turtle to me. Wouldn't want him in my pond. He would wreck havoc with your fish. Thanks for sharing pictures. :)

Yep, been there done that this year.... Fortunately mine was too small to eat any of the fish, but he sure did make a dent in my lilypads before I caught him.  Those little boogers have an unbelievably strong bite!   {nono}

Um, that open mouth should tell you what type of turtle he is. BE sure to keep all of your body parts away from that mouth.

Good thing that you caught him.  We never did catch ours.  No more damage to our fish but I just can't believe that he left, not with such a good food supply.  It sure did put a damper on my getting in the pond to pull dead lily leaves.  I really need to do it, but just keep thinking about my fingers wiggling in front of his nose. :-\

In the overhead view of him, that pointed nose gave him away....and in the pic with the mouth open, I could just hear that snapper hissing!  I'm for certain he's outta there, right?   :D

Geesh, I was nervous when I got into the shallow end of the pond and the bullheads were knocking into my boots! Ugh, then last week I saw a snake go now into the pond and work it's way to the other side and BASK IN THE SUN! YIKES, I don't know what the heck I would do if I saw one of those snappers..... &-)

The thought of eating a turtle really grosses me out.  :-\  Take him on a ride to the nearest natural body of water.

Actually, LeeAnne, Snapper soup is a delicacy, but little turt here took a ride to a large lake this afternoon.  I offered him to our local nature museum but they are not taking in any live creatures right now.  It is interesting that  my 1 acre lot is surrounded by chain link fence, so I wonder where he got in.  Also, I am at least 1/2 a mile from any decent sized pond or lake.  This was a young turtle, about 12 inches nose to tail but his shell would have measured only about 6 inches.  Wonder where momma is.......

Now I am nervous about getting in pond, I have had a couple of them come around, and felt safe that pond was in fenced in area and safe from them.  One was headed right for my fence when I spotted him, he turned and went back toward the pond he came from.  Darn, just got the Heron problem under control, now got to worry about darn turtles..... >:(-

Ewww! John, you brought back really unpleasant memories. I lived in an apartment in a cul-de-sac years ago and all the apartments faced the parking lot. One day I heard a commotion and looked out to find some people hanging a big snapper from a tree in the lot. They were poking it and IMO torturing the poor thing preparatory to killing it for soup. That upset me so much I called the police to see if they could do anything about it only to be told "there's nothing we can do, people do eat them you know" to which I responded "Yes, and I eat steak, but I'm sure you'd object if I slaughtered a cow in the parking lot!"   :swear: Closed my curtains, turned up the volume on the tv and cried.
