new hardwood floor
« on: August 12, 2006, 07:27:09 PM »
This borders on amazing!
Well, it looks like I'm getting that new hardwood floor for my kitchen, hall, and downstirs bath. My neighbor has been bringing me 8' pieces of scrap wood in his pickup for kindling for the upcoming winter from a wood shop next to where he works. I'll cut it into short lengths with my miter saw. Yesterday, they were cleaning house and scrapping a lot of wood. He loaded up a load for me to burn and some for his brother that does woodworking and 74, 8' X 6" X 1/4" thick, solid oak that has been milled to these dimensions. It's kiln dried and has been stored inside. He told me that if I had a use for it, I could have it. I took 10 of the pieces home and set them down on the kitchen floor. BEAUTIFUL!! I told him that I would use it for a wood floor that I wanted. He came over and we talked and decided that it was a done deal.
That's 296 sq ft of oak. Straight edges, uniform thickness.
What I have to do other than prepare the floor, is cut and glue. When it's all down, I'll sand and finish it. What a score!
It'll probably be an early winter/late fall project,

Steve

Very cool.  Will they butt up against each other or will you put those groves (sorry I don't know the technical term) in the sides causing them to interlock.  We put in a engineered hardwood floor in our kitchen and it cost several hundreds of dollars even with us doing all the installation.  Sounds like you've saved a bundle.
