new plant for me "Snow on the mountain"
« on: September 18, 2006, 12:15:26 PM »
The DW bought a boquet for the house. It was very different.
I think it's rooting in the vase.  I tried potting a few.
Yes. i looked it up and the one word that kept popping up was..."Round-Up"
What has been your experience?

I think it was Betty that used to have it growing in her yard . . . . . said it was very invasive.  She sent me some seeds and I killed it.

I bought 50 plugs off ebay a month or so ago.. they are in the island bed out front under the dogwoods.  I to found the word invasive by most but some said it was easy to control.  Where i am putting it it has no chance to get into any garden area so I hope it goes crazy there.  I think they must be very good for very difficult to plant places like mine.. under trees on banks with little water or sun.  Mine is taking off pretty good so far.  I think its beautiful

Snow on the Mountain in Jerry's neighborhood would probably be Euphorbia marginata.

I think you guys are thinking of Variegated Bishop's Weed which is Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegatum'
http://www.naturehills.com/new/product/perennialsdetails.aspx?prodid=2717
(also known as Snow on the Mountain)

Either way, it's a pretty plant, although Bishop's Weed is BY FAR more invasive, and perennial.
Euphorbia marginata is not hardy...so it'll die in areas that have frost, even thought it rseeds everywhere...frost will kill it.

This is why I hate common names so much. >:(
2 completely different plants with the same name.....VERY MISLEADING!  ::)

Marginata it is!  Very clearly.  Think it will root for me?
What do you think of the rooting hormones?  I do use them but never saw any big difference.

Well if it's rooting by itself already, just in water, you don't need any rooting hormone.
If you happen to have some RH, it wont hurt, and many rooting hormones have a built-in fungicide.

Most Euphorbias root VERY easily! O0

Teresa, I can believe you killed Bishop's Weed, since you also have killed Cat Tails. ;) ;D lol

I really like that variegated euphorbia.  I'll have to keep my eye open for it to plant in my parkway.  I have several euphorbia and they tend to send up plenty of volunteers but they are easily removed.

A couple of years ago I kept hearing a popping sound coming from outside.  I would poke my head outside and I couldn't see anything unusual.  I would return to the computer and again I would here the popping sound.  I finally went outside and just sat there for a while in order to figure out what was making the popping sound.  Then it happened again and I looked up and noticed that my tall Euphorbia lambii had clusters of seed pods that were being heated by the sun and they would explode sending the seeds flying.  Mystery solved (8:-)  Castor bean trees also do the same thing but they make more noise and send their seeds twice as far...

I agree, I hate common names, there is another plant here commonly called Snow on the Mountain but I can't remember what it's Latin name is at the moment.
