Siskin
« on: January 28, 2008, 05:07:49 AM »
We don't see this little chap here very often. It is supposed to winter somewhere around the mediterranean but it is obviously mild enough for it to have travelled farther north at this time of year
I think this is a male, rather more yellow than on the female :)

He's a beauty too. Looks something like our finches that I call a wild canary. Don't know the real name. So they like the peanuts? Are those raw peanuts?

What is your weather like during this time of year Sam?

Raw peanuts Esther
Weather is mild but very wet.  Suppposed to get a lot colder this week.  We have also been having a lot of gale force winds, so it hasn't been pleasant
Nice today though :)
Someone has suggested that this is in fact a female, and that a male is even more yellow with a black patch on its head.  I live and learn.
I will see if I can catch a shot of a male :)
They are indeed of the finch family apparently .....

He's a beaut.  Must be nice to enjoy the variety of birds in your yard.  Must be nice to be a bird in your yard...so much good food available!

Thanks for the update Sam!

It has now been confirmed by my expert advisor that this in fact is a young male, and that the black 'cap' can be seen just developing
So I was right first time :)

Nice to have the birds so close to the house for photographing!  We occasionally see pine siskins here.  They are more sparrow like in their colouring than your bird and it can sometimes be difficult to see the bits of yellow on their wings and tail.  I really enjoy seeing your bird pictures.  emm

Emm
I had a potted Sumoch tree which I moved close to the kitchen window, and hung a bird feeder onto it
It gets the birds closer and enables some quite good pics :)

Nice picture Whis4ey,

I like the idea of the peanut feeder. I just replenished my feeders last weekend, and I think that I'll add a peanut feeder to the group.
I'm sure the birds will agree with the idea O0

There are no birds eating right now. Maybe it's too cold?

I got this pic of a young female, and you can see that it is less yellow.  Also the breast is speckled white and not yellow at all
We live and learn :)

I'm not much into birds but my stepson made a beautiful feeder for me for my birthday so I felt obligated to put it out. Then I bought a thistle sock. Then I put peanutbutter in a peanutbutter cover and packed as much birdseed into it as possible and hung it outside.

This morning my DH says, "Look at that." There in the feeder was a squirrel eating his breakfast. We can't figure out how he got up the pipe to the feeder. So guess we'll have to figure out a baffle for him.
