« on: February 04, 2008, 04:38:33 PM »
Wow it was 80 degrees here today....I just had to take off the nets and take a few pics.....Looks like the resident catfish got hungry during the cold because I have less babies than I did have  ::)----(I'm sure she only ate the ugly ones)  {:-P;;.....thats O.K. We still have about 200 or more blue babies growing out in the big tank.....

Throw in a few pellets and just look how active they become  ;D....

Your baby blues are beautiful.  They look happy in your 80 degree heat wave.  Sooo many babies in there too!

Just wondering... is the red and black one considered blue, too?  Because I have a really ugly fish that is black, gold, a little red, and a whole lot of blue. One of my absolute favorites, he's about the only one with a name, and I call him BlueBoy (or sometimes Bubba - this IS Texas, after all!)

He was from PetSmart.  I'm just wondering if he's what the experts would call a blue koi.

Julles the orange, black and white one is a Showa....as far as I know only the asagi and Shusui (Doitsu version of an asagi)are considered blue---of course probably Goshiki are too...It could have some asagi in it...depending on how old it is...I've noticed in breeding my domestic and longfin that sometimes black looks more blue on small koi.....

So, I guess what I'm asking is what is your KH/GH in the pond and is it a health thing in hard water or a color thing? I thought most of the water in Oklahoma was hard water. Maybe not up where you are? Sorry I wasn't more clear.

How beautiful, I've always wanted an Asagi... one of DH's coworkers gave us a baby (4") Shusui last fall, I am sooooo hoping it is still alive under all the ice in the lily pond.  Put it and 4 other smaller koi and a couple goldies in there this fall, to late to qt them for the main pond and to much to handle inside all winter, so now I cross my fingers and wait.

Kay, I have hard water and it does hurt the colors, but not the health. The high KH and GH (to a degree) are good for health, but not for color/pattern. Everything tends to darken in hard water, White becomes less white, and patterns begin to meld. Kujakus become absolutely weird. If the concern is that color/pattern changes for the detriment, then yes, hardness is a problem. If the concern is health, then hardness is entirely good. Just like people.

Kay I tested my KH last year a couple times...can't remember the exact numbers but, I want to say somewhere in the high 70s or low 80s....never tested the GH....my ph is usually between 8 and 9....every so often I will test it and its 7.5....I don't test often....With Fred and Ginger if anything is the smallest bit off they start flashing and jumping....So I just keep up on my water changes and watch them....It is the color that hard water effects....they tend to get shimis in hard water I'm told....also they recommend NOT feeding color enhancing food to asagi too...
Marla a friend of mine has a 25" male Shusui...He is gorgeous....I wouldn't mind getting either a longfin asagi or longfin Shusui one of these day to put in the longfin pond....everypond needs a blue fish  o(:-)

Like Karen J said I have also heard that hard water will darken the blues, sometimes to black and once darkened the color will not change back.  My water is also very hard, high ph also  but the fish are happy and I'm not in the show market.  Here is a pic. of the Shusui and the other little koi one of DH's coworkers wife gave us, if I would not have taken them she was just going to toss them on the compost...couldn't refuse free fish even if they aren't real special, the compost heap seemed drastic.  Hoping they are doing well out under the ice in the lily pond, come spring if they are well I'll transfer them to the main pond.
