Two pretty lilies from last weekend (pics)
« on: September 25, 2006, 11:08:53 PM »
It's getting cold at night now and the tropicals are slowing down. I will be moving them into the greenhouse soon. I got these two photos on the weekend.
I love the colour at this time of year.

Tina, Lucky tried to eat this bloom before it opened and tore a small piece off. He's such a brat!

Gorgeous photos there.

How many plants do you typically move into your GH and basement each winter? I remember thinking it would be a huge undertaking, as many great plants as you had outside.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks every one. August Koch isn't my favourite lily in the pond. I find it a bit plain but it's very photogenic. I haven't shot a bad picture of it yet, even when I totally screw up the settings.
Mike, moving the tropicals in is a major pain. I need to move to a warmer climate. First they all go into the greenhouse Sept-Oct. Then they are all moved into the basement after the first frost, where they stay until about March. Then it's back out into the greehouse until June for the lilies. The others go out onto the patio earlier. Some of the potted plants ie Brugs, are so large now that Pete has to move them with one of the tractors.
Anyway I love them so much that it's still worth the trouble. We are planning to have a large conservatory instead of a double garage at the new home. It will have a formal pond as well. That will help a lot.

Remember you can save the tubers from tropical lilies. They go in a bag with damp sand. I wintered over 94 tropical lily tubers last winter in my basement. I put them in popcorn cans. It is easy to do. If they don't have a tuber I cut leaves back and roots back and put in a smaller pot and put in aquariums. I do not throw any tropical lilies away. I save tubers or plants.

Thanks again for the nice comments.
I thought summer was over when the weather turned cold but we are experiencing another heat wave and the lilies are putting up some more buds. So hopefully I can get a few more photos to play with over the winter.
I plan to tuber as many of my lilies as possible and also keep the plants going in our indoor setup with a metal hylide lamp. I also got some seeds from a member and will be trying Victorias again so it should be a busy winter again this year.
