New Dwarf Victoria
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:14:37 AM »
Hi all,
I had hinted in another thread about something pretty cool that I was going to be able to post on the IWC site.
Per legal agreements I cannot also post here but would like to share a link.

http://www.internationalwaterlilycollection.com/The%20Plants/Victoria/newvictoria.html

After 200 years, there may be a new species Victoria. Patrick Nutt and Don & Shirley Bryne went on an expedition a year ago and found the new plants.
Further testing is still being done to determine if it is indeed a separate species plant from V. amazonica.
It is much smaller with a number of differing characteristics.
For those of you with a twitch for something exotic, this may be the future of Victoria for people who do not have huge display ponds.
we hope to have permission to post some photos in the near future.

Happy New Year Tim!  Long time no see!

That is very exciting indeed to realize a dwarf Victoria!  I couldn't possibly grow a full size Victoria but if the dwarf is a fraction of the original wouldn't that be lovely?  Thanks for the announcement!

Hi girl, glad to hear from you.
Now this Dwarf won't fit in a barrel container but with 3 ft leaves being the norm instead of 6 to 8 ft it is a dwarf in that category but still much larger than regular tropicals.

If this is true, I would love to try one in the lily pond.  We have an aquatic nursery in the area that has the large ones, however they would take over my pond, and I have other lilies I like.

Interesting!

I'm surprised no one on Victoria Adventure has mentioned it.  I sent this link to the VA mailing list...hope that was ok...I should have asked first.

I'm sure she is aware but just like me she is probably waiting for the official release of information.
I posted here because I had been given permission to release what I have so far.
I figure as long as it is on the IWC site, it will eventually make it's way around.
I just thought I would give my friends here some info.
It may still be some time for the details to come forth but it is still exciting.

If you go to the link in the beginning, there is now a picture.
It is the first picture taken of the dwarf in this country.
It has a small pad next to it that has not finished unfurling.

Wow how exciting. And Patrick Nutt should know if it is possibly a new one, so I am excited about this.

It really is cool. I can't wait until summer time so I can get up close and personal with this new marvel.
What is even more amazing to me is that in this day in age, there are still possibilities out there.
I mean when most of the world is on a satelite or google images etc, it is great to know that exploration and discovery are not finished.

Please send more information if you are growing, or know someone who is growing out this plant.  8-)~

I'm wondering if it will grow larger in the sun - like the amazonica? Has anyone done any other testing? What kind of testing do you do to see if its a different species?
