Spray Paint for Plastic - Anyone Have Experience?
« on: April 09, 2008, 02:14:56 PM »
I noticed in a couple of hardware stores the new paint intended for plastic surfaces, like those lawn chairs that get cloudy looking over time.

Has anyone here used them?  How did it stick?  How did it look?  Durability?

I've used it.  I found it not to last under water.  Eventually it peeled off of my pvc pump connection.  I've also used it to hide my filter.  It'll easily scratch off.

I have not, but most paints won't stick to plastic.  Even vinyl banners required a compatible paint.

We painted white pvc couplers black last year and it works great. Ours haven't peeled or scratched off so far. Nontoxic in the pond too.

I don't remember the brand but the word FUSION comes to mind. It is special for plastic applications. We used it on shutters facing west. Whatever brand you buy, make sure it is for plastic.

Krylon Fusion works very well and I have used it a few times at Mike's. My step mom has also used it with amazing results even years later.

I've used the Krylone Fusion too. I know I've used it for those plastic chairs, the top of my skimmer, the metal meter pan, and my aluminum dryer vent. Those last items are metal, but I wanted that color and it worked out well. It's a good product.

YES, Krylon!! The old brain only came up with half of it. LOL.  :-\ I painted the pipes that are on the front of the house where the utility stuff looked like an eyesore with that and also the PVC that is the exhaust and intake for the high efficiency furnace to match the house. That's been a long time and they look like new.

It is imperative the surface be clean before using for a proper finish and no peeling in the future.

Painted the plastic shutters with FUSION on my house 4 years ago and they still look great! even baking in the hot direct sun, the black has not faded too much.

I used black Krylon Fusion to paint some flex PVC and two vinyl shelves that I'm using as plant stands.  It held up well under water for ~3 years.  It must have peeled of without me even noticing:  This year I noticed that it is completely missing from the flex PVC and almost gone from the vinyl shelves.    They are all pretty much white now - with a slight covering of green algae.  One of these days, I'll replace them, but it's not high on my list of things to do right now  ;).  The paint will buy you a few years, after that you may not even care enough to fix it...

My local hardware store had the Krylon Fusion on sale today, for $3.99, so I bought two.  Color is exaclty the same as my plastic lawn furniture.

It didn't go on smoothly, though.  Lots of areas that look like thicker masses of paint, and a few drips.  Maybe if you did a lot of REALLY thin coats, you could get a uniform appearance.  I'm not all that concerned, though, 'cause it's outdoors and perfection isn't essential.
