Survivors!
« on: April 16, 2008, 03:46:56 PM »
Here is picture perfect proof that 2 so-called tropicals made it through our zone 7b eastern LI winter... :tease:
First one is Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Variegata' aka Variegated Star Jasmine

And My Zantedeschia aethiopica 'White Giant' aka Hercules Spotted Giant Calla

Looks like Hercules is pupping out big time!!! 8)
(The main stems is dead and rotted, but there are little baby pups coming up all around it.)
Peace to all  ... Joyce

I hope you are you going to take those hardy tropicals with you to the new place.  They probably won't survive without you.

That's a pretty cool micro climate that you have out there on that point. What's it like when a noreaster blows in?
Probably just hang on, huh?

Sonny, yup, taking them! I tried prying away a Calla pup to share with someone last weekend,
and it was too attached...and the roots go to China. I can't imagine what it is going to be like when I try to dig the whole clump. :o

Double S, the Calla bloomed through November last year.
Here is a pic of it November 2007...

And another, the leaves are over 18" long!

Steve, the Noreasters are brutal here and this past winter was one of the worst I have seen in a long time.
LI is flat as a board, so there is nothing to slow down the winds. Yup, We just hang on!  (8:-)

Will you be in a very similar micro-climate when you move?

Yes, it's a bit farther east (3 miles) from where we live now, and on the SW sheltered side of a hillside (good for winter noreasters) with excellent drainage.
Bad drainage is what kills in the winter here. Being farther east on LI means you have more water around you, closer to the water,
so more insulation during the winter. Any type of 'hills' are hard to find on LI.  :) Being on the SW side means you get sheltered from the noreasters.
But in the summer, you get the prevailing winds. The front of our property is 32' above sea level and the back is at 62-65' above sea level.  :o

Most of LI is no more that 15-20' above sea level.
