This is a heavy stepping stone.  It is being lifted by a new shoot.

I don't let any bamboo get close to the pond.  It is easy to stop dead in it's tracks.

iD SAY THE STUFF IS AT LEAST 30 FT FROM THE POND. Yes, I have worried.

My black bamboo has started shooting as well.  Because it now gets regular water from the newly installed drip irrigation system the bamboo looks much healthier and my new culms are a nice size......but nothing near the size of your timber bamboo  O0

It is easily stopped Tink.

I got this from an Aussie site. Cut it off and IMMEDIATLEY soak the opening with Round-Up.
It may even kill an adjoinding stalk or two!

They also sell vinyl root barriers that effectively contain runners.  Your other option is to buy a clumper bamboo.

Mikey, when we plant bamboo at work on our jobs, we use a bamboo barrier too.
We use the 3' deep barrier, because about 6" needs to be above ground too.
And when you overlap the seams, we use the plastic twist ties and then gorilla glue and clamps
to seal it up. Our clients think it is overkill, but we don't.  {nono}
(especially when they would probably get mad at us a year or two down the road when the bamboo starts taking over)

Remember, bamboo shoots are edible and delicious, so when snapping them off, save them!
There are probably dozens of recipes on the internet for Bamboo Shoots. 8)

Tinks, get a clumping bamboo!
I am nursing along 'White Dragon' which I bought in the middle of the winter.
It's a variegated clumper. 8)

I bought it here when we were ordering wholesale from them at work...

If you want a clumping bamboo that doesn't try to take over the world, try Dendrocalamus gigantea. Its a little cold sensitive, but makes mahvelous big culms.  8-)~
The organic gardeners close your ears... but what works for me is plant them with some green sand (they need extra silica) and then water with Miracle GRow.

I got several different types of bamboo last year....and planted a little chunk of a variegated variety that is only supposed to get 3' tall about 2' behind the swing and then laid shade cloth around the surrounding area----to my surprise I found about 5 little twigs of it coming up under the swing-starting in the back and going almost to the front of the swing---boy it does spread fast  :o...now only if my black bamboo would get that vigorous....
