Is Shade Good for a Pond?

Is shade a good thing for a pond?  Seems to me, ponds out in nature are NOT shaded, except at some of the edges where trees hang over.  But then again, most "wild" ponds aren't exactly clear, either.

I noticed in the Tiki Lights thread that Jerry's pond is completely covered with shade screen.

My own pond cleared up significantly once I got vines growing over it.  And my hornwart has grown and thrived and now covers the complete surface of the water.

I know that most pond fish are cold-blooded, so shade helps them, esp if the pond isn't deep enough to keep a stable, cooler temperature near the bottom.

But don't your water lilies need sun - FULL sun?  And don't fish and ponds in general need a bit of sun?

What are the pros and cons of shading a pond?

Julles. Water plants need sun. 60% shade screen can work.  Mine is NOT shade screen, but merely netting.  Probably 5% shade

Koi ponds are fine in shade as they are destroyers of lilies, although I am trying a few experiments right now to see if they can cohabitate.
Lily ponds need as much sun as you can throw at them for the best bloom production. You know I live near you and I have virtually no shade in my yard.
The only lilies that are ever adversely affected are the really frilly lilies with small petaloids instead of stamen. They tend to dry and burn in out temps and humidity.
I put my King of Siam and a few others so that they get partial shade throughout the day.

My pond is shaded with a greenhouse. I have changed it but I always had great lilies in it. I even had tropicals until my koi got to big and like eating them. I just took out my Joey Tomocieks this spring. They were always in full bloom in 12 inch pots and most of the times had 7 or 8 blooms on them.

Thanks Gary. I haven't seen your pond for a long time. The Joey you sent me didn't make it. But the rest did and are doing well. I am now dividing them and sharing them. So that makes you a grandpa. LOL

I find that my shaded pond is very cool, restful and tranquil.  Here in the deep South, we like that!!  As others have pointed out, lilies don't flower as much in shade but most other plants do just fine with growth and coverage.  It's just a matter of what you are expecting.  Down here I like sitting next to my shady pond.  Trying to enjoy one in this hot, humid sun would be a quick fix and a flight back to the air conditioning.

Thank you all for your replies.  And what a beautiful set-up, Gander!  My dream would be to have a huge screened-in outdoor garden.  But I would have to have several ponds, for fish, plants, lilies, frogs, etc.   

I like shaded area, and, as pointed out above, in the South, it makes being outdoors more enjoyable.  I did, though, today clip quite a bit of the vine cover, to let some more light hit the pond, esp. the end with the plants.
