Gardening is harder than the gym!
« on: April 19, 2008, 06:19:12 AM »
After several months I felt I could try the gym again. (Bike Mostly)  My membership had expired during my health problem.  I told them "let me see if it goes OK."  I tried 10 minutes at a conservative speed.  Felt nothing!  I was doing 45 minutes to an hour daily. Hopefully will again.
I do "heavy" gardening. Planting, moving and transplanting. It really tires me.  I think the bending over forces air out?  In any event it's a lot harder than the bike!
I will renew my membership and seek to pay what others do!!  I was screwed last time! >:(-

Hope it works out for you.

I have never done the gym thing so have no comparrison. One thing about gardening, you are accomplishing something and getting exercise without having to think about it being the reason you are gardening. I'd rather garden than go for a walk.

I think gardening is good exercise for the spirit.  I find it very relaxing.  However my type of gardening lacks adequate cardio-vascular exercise and when I only garden without my brisk walks I put on weight......

I prefer gardening too. :)
The only time I had a gym membership is when I worked and lived in Manhattan.
And I walked just about everywhere when I lived there. At least 5 miles a day.
Was somewhere between a size 4 and 6.
I think the walking was the best excersize!
To me, the gym was a bit of a drag, but we had a corporate membership,
and that helped motivate when the whole art staff room would go together. 8)

Then we would go out to dinner and pig out. ::)
Peace to all  ... Joyce

It's an addiction.  I have been a gym member for almost 40 years.  22 at my last gym.  Only ended it when I could no longer keep up in basketball.  Now it is just hanging on. Oh some of the scenery is nice! o(:-)

Yesterday I had a real garden work out.  I bought and carried 5 - 3cu.ft bags of compost for a new vege garden in my yard.  Then I had to work all the compost into the dirt.  Oh, forgot to mention I had to carry all the blocks to build a retainer wall for the the garden.  That's 18 blocks and caps.  I slept really really well last night!  O0  @O@

Annette: What's going into the veggie garden?

Jerry: That would irritate me too.  Memberships are pretty cheap these days.

We tried gyms in the past but unless you have several people with the same membership to encourage you it is too easy to drop out....  I need someone to prod me....  The fetching one won't go anymore because of ogling by men.  It's no longer just a subtle steal of a look but rather blatant staring....

I have never been able to keep a gym membership. I go a couple of times and then have too many excuses, like I really need to garden.  lol

I got my exercise yesterday. Ripped out a very overgrown bed by the lily pond in town. When I got home, my thighs, hands, back and chest hurt. So I took a glass of wine and a long soak in the tub. :)

Now I will have several good nights peering around and trying to decide what to do with the empty garden bed. Its semi-elevated, very porous soil, full sun.

Seems like they know star material when they see you!

Mike, Vege Garden = My mother is controlling that matter.  So far I only have 2 types of tomatoes, Brandywine and another one with orangy flesh, can't remember name.  Lots of green onions of many variety.  Anything else mostly my mothers call.

I think gardening is wonderful exercise.  I'd rather dig in the dirt than clean house.

I'm having a little problem with my right shoulder.  I have to have PT 3 times a week for 5 weeks then go back to doc to see if surgery is necessary.  Torn rotator cuff and other problems.  I got a cortizone shot yesterday after the results of the MRI.  The PT told me...no digging in the garden...a bummer of a spring.

Gardening can be great exercise!  And so can a workout at a gym.  I have belonged to gyms for years, but I do the high-energy classes that do a combo of cardiovascular and muscular training like kickboxing, aerobics, and step-aerobics.   I've never been able to get a decent workout in the "floor" area just using machines and weights.  I'm sure it's because I'm just not motivated alone, though. If you can get a trainer to work with you and show you what you specifically need for a challenging workout, it would be helpful. Maybe you need to add some weights to your routine.

The weights and machines are not for aerobic exercise.  You are right.
the good news about my recent illness was that I have NO palque or hardening of the arteries.
Around 40 years at the gym may have paid off.
Basketball  was wonderful for me, but about 8 years ago I no longer could keep up.  Not a complaint since I was the oldest there.

Well, I would say that 40 years at the gym certainly did pay off for you, Jerry.  Do you have any idea how unusual it is for someone your age to not have any plaque or hardening of the arteries?  Kudos to you for taking such good care of yourself!  I'll bet you will live to be 100...at least.   O0
