Help - Can a tear be fixed?
« on: May 12, 2008, 09:12:55 AM »
I'm new to water gardening, just starting out... or want to anyway.  I was so excited that someone gave me a prefab pond and waterfall that they had in storage, about 100 gallons.  I spent last week gathering all the supplies to make a Skippy Filter.  Friday I bought a pump and the rest of the supplies.  Saturday I finally got to pick up the pond.  Brought it home and while washing it down, I found a V shaped tear clean through the hard plastic, about 1 inch long.  I think the tear happened while it was in storage, because it looks almost new otherwise.   Can a tear in a plastic prefab be fixed?

Can you return it?  I would if possible.  Pond liners can be patched.  I would think a preform would be easy.  Contact the maker!

Maybe you could get some liner patching tape and silicone sealer and make a "sandwich". Put the silicone on the front and back of crack, then press on liner tape front and back, completely covering the crack & the silicone. Since both sides of the liner tape are sticky, press on some liner or plastic wrap over it.

I don't have any experience doing that, it's just an idea.

Or, as someone here told me previously, get some liner and line the pre-form!

My original prefrom had a crack.  A local pond store sold me this wide sticky rubbery tape patch.  Had me clean the area with rubbing alcohol and then stick it to it.  This was 2 years ago.  I put a piece on the inside and outside.

Ponds are like patato chips, ya just can't have one.

You could also try that expanding foam in a spray can, by Dow Chemical.  They have a black color that is formulated specificaly for bridging larger gaps in ponds and waterfalls.  About $6 a can.  Check their website for more info.
