What could be eating the lily pads?
« on: June 07, 2008, 06:46:58 PM »
I've never had this happen before.  In my above ground pond at least half the lily pads on all the lilies have been bit off under the water level.  One of the pots has gravel spilled out of it.  They are all about two feet away from the sides.  At first I thought perhaps a racoon, but decided that didn't make any sense unless they started diving now.  A deer?  We have lots of deer out at the farm, but would they stick their heads in the water to bite off the pads?  Not a good thing.  The plants are already about a month behind due to lack of sun and heat so if there is going to be any blooms this year whatever it is needs to stop chowing down on them.  Other than also stunted from the same lack of heat and sun the inground pond lilies have no damage.

Invisible koi?

Definitely sounds like a turtle to me.  Mine will occassionally snip a lily stem, and if the rocks are not heavy enough in the pot, they will try to get to the bulb thingy (sorry, word retrieval is gone today.).  Good luck.

Not a turtle unless they can climb vertical 18 inches and get back out again with the vertical interior sides.  Must be a deer.
