Cryptomeria japonica 'Spiralis'
« on: July 21, 2008, 09:42:45 AM »
Another plant I bought on my day trip to Newport last Saturday.
It's a dwarf, and in 10 years will be 5-6' wide and 10' tall. :cool3:
It's about 18" wide now.

I love dwarf conifers. That is a really neat one.

Don't know about you but for me they tend to grow much bigger than they are supposed to with no fertilizer. I have had to rip out quite a few over the years. One was never supposed to reach 2' in any direction and hit 4' when I pulled it out. Not mislabeled either. This is conifer country.

I bought one of these about 7 years ago
It is now about 12-15 feet high :)
Unusual leaves though they are now above head height and don't get so much conversation from visitors ......

Thanks everyone!
Thanks for the feedback LeeAnne and Sam. 8)
I would prefer this one to get pretty big...gave it about an 8' wide radius to grow into! :)

Sam, if you can post a pic of yours, I would greatly appreciate it!  :worship:

Sam, did you see the pic of my Cunninghamia lanceolata glauca 'Samurai No Kobushi' ?

A new one on me Joyce and an interesting little story :)
Here is a pic of my own plant, taken a couple of years after it was planted.   I looks like it would be about 8 or 9 feet high at that time?
I will take an up to date pic for you.  My own tree gets quite a lot of wind and isn't
really broadening out that much ...  it loses leaves in the wind quite easily

How long did it take to get that size? 7 years? That's not too bad at all!  8)

About the ten year mark, but it was a reasonable size when bought :)

Yeah, but that is still a good growth rate. O0
Made me go look at mine more closely today, hubby was with me and we both think it has grown about an inch already.
Especially the center part, and in an upwards direction at the tips of the new growth.
I'll take pix in the light tomorrow. 8)
