Edited: I went to grisoft and downloaded the new free edition it is called 7.5

Thought I'd bring this back up.

As of May 31st, 2008 AVG free will no longer be available.
Have to decided what to do.

We have BitDefender now. So far so good. I hear from our computer guru that there is a virus that disables anti-virus software and warns the user that there is no protection . Asks to download a FREE program. If you do it infects the computer. Scary!

I do not think AVG Free is going away, they've just released a new version. The old version may be going away but there is nothing on their website to indicate that there will not be a free one.

Download the new version of AVG Free version 8 from their website. I just installed in on Mike's new computer and it works fine.

I downloaded version 8 yesterday. I got a pop up screen when I logged on to the computer that 7.5 was being deactivated and that I needed to download 8.

They are NOT stopping a free version, you just need to download and install the new one.

They do try to get you to buy their pay versions instead but the free one is available and not going anywhere.

Click on this link, the version on the left is the free one. The one on the right is for money. I downloaded and installed the one on the left two days ago.

FYI
Version 8 only works with XP or Vista

I'm not particularly happy with it, it has anti spyware now and it seems to be grossly slowing down my computer when I am online. I may go to another free antivirus.

I've been reading their user forums and it seems the new link checker and anti spyware are the problem with "hanging" webpages. You can disable the link checker but then your tray icon grays out and says you aren't protected which could get annoying.

LeeAnne, have you found a better Free program yet? I use AVG as well so will need to either go with this slower version you mention or come up with something different.

Well just got a pop up after I updated.. June 25 and there will no longer be any updates available for 7.5.

Many of us did and it was fine. I finally got AVG 8.0 a few junk things came with it.

I got rid of AVG and went with AVAST.

I hated how slow version 8 was. It was ridiculous. I know it was free and one shouldn't complain but I just could not deal with it.
I didn't feel like doing all the work arounds I found online so I uninstalled it.

* Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from our website.
* Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:
o save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
o open menu Start -> Run
o type
